How is that good for library patrons?
as I always told my kids when they were getting ready for a new experience; "don't buy trouble". don't you think that there has been a great deal of thought and planning put into this and Amazon has no desire to be a bad guy at the end of the day? Since nobody outside of Amazon or Overdrive seems to have any details on how and when the Overdrive Kindle lending program will be operated, whether or not it is a bad idea or the best idea evah! remains to be seen.

Their press release specifically stated that these books will be Kindle books. Unless Amazon is giving these books to the libraries for free, they're counting on their dominance in the market to force libraries to change formats.

Read Tubemonkey's post prior to yours that I am quoting. You will see he is most likely correct and he is a Kindle user. It's not a hate of Amazon. It's a splintering of something that works into something that won't work as well.

Given the waiting lists on ePub eBooks, I doubt libraries will be changing formats. But I do think it will be a splintering of library eBook budgets and the number of new eBooks will dwindle per bulk purchase.

Or they will subside the supply to libraries to below what it would cost the libraries to stock ePub copies.

What you are saying is that you think it is a bad idea.
That is a subjective statement, it cannot be stated as though it was an objective one, which is what you tried to do.

Amazon, the new HarperCollins. Hope libraries treat them the same way. Pity OD doesn't.

It looks like all existing OD titles will be available, at no additional cost:

The lending will be available for all generations of the Kindle as well as Kindle reading apps, and it will integrate with all the existing ebook catalogs in the United States powered by OverDrive. In other words, the libraries—including schools, colleges and public libraries—will not have to add a new format, and the ebooks now available on the OverDrive sites will be immediately integrated with the Kindle, Dan Stasiewski, a marketing associate with OverDrive, told LJ.
So how is this going to work? Is the Kindle getting ePub compatibility via ADE? If the Kindle is not getting ePub, then there has to be an on the fly conversion from ePub to AZW. I also don't see Adobe going for this unless it's ADE on the Kindle.

Well, there is one more solution... If you borrow a library eBook, the copy Kindle users get comes from Amazon. That would work.

Ah jeah.

No extra format for libraries to buy.
No extra burden on library budgets.
The sky is not falling. In fact, that's just the sun simply breaking through the clouds.

What are the libraries paying for when they subscribe to OverDrive?
Is it x simultaneous licensed copies of an ePub file?
Of it is x simultaneous licensed copies of the work, in whatever format?
If the latter, then the libraries see no change, it is just that the OverDrive backend supplies a different file to the end user.
It is probably a reasonable assumption that Amazon already have Kindle version of (nearly?) all the books that are available through OverDrive already.
