International Marine is McGraw-Hills' nautical books branch. On their website, they hint at the novel idea of having a code somewhere in physical texts that allows online access or a download of a digital copy.

I live and work on a boat; having copies of all the how-to books by the likes of Nigel Calder would be a nice way to save space. Hmm....Mr. Calder's a bit of a techy....now I'm off to find his email address...

Have you heard, are they planning new content through Webscriptions or will it be sold through Tor.com?
Well, I'd heard it was back on, but the Webscriptions site lists no available Tor content, even though Tor is listed as a participating publisher.

I'll know for sure in a few weeks, as I expect to see folks who will have current data.

Having Tor's email come from Macmillan was interesting, as it emanated from the next step up the chain, so to speak. Now I start to wonder if the lack of Tor content through Webscriptions is not "No DRM" related these days, but more "Not done through us!" Baen is manufactured and distributed by Simon and Schuster, who are a Macmillan competitor, so there may be internal corporate objections to ebook sales through Baen.

Of course, Webscriptions is set up and managed by Arnold Bailey of Webwrights, who is an independent contractor, not a Baen employee. I don't know what the contractual deal is between Arnold and Baen, but it's possible he could provide electronic sales services to other interested parties.

"Curiouser and curiouser!" said Alice...

The Nigel Calder I'm aware of is a former editor of the New Scientist and writer on a number of non-maritime topics. I gather this is another one?

I'd be surprised if there were that many goofy looking polymath with the same name. Is this the man?

He's quite an expert on boating issues, like diesel engines, chart-reading, and 12 VDC systems.

I used MobiCreator. It looks fine to me. What kind of problems do you find?

Might look fine with Mobicreator, but I found it didn't handle all the paragraphs correctly. Made a mess of them overall. The only thing that seemed to work was the out out from Adobe Acrobat Pro. Once Mobicreator had converted the PDF into HTML, I did use the HTML to have a look at it and discovered that some paragraphs were not correct.

It will display as it is on the 505, but to convert it, the best way is probably to download & install the free "Mobile Creator" software (install the 'advanced' option), then use that to import the PDF. (Choose a utf-8 encoding - I went with the default & had some issues as a result). It'll create a folder with a html file & images, then convert that. I did the last convertion with BookDesigner, but you could try zipping up the folder (to keep the images) & using libprs500 as an alternative.

I was incorrect. Even Acrobat pro bungled some of the paragraphs. This is why I hate PDF eBooks. The conversions don't always work all that well.

I think we should send e-mail en mass to TOR to tell them we don't want PDF. Should we use the address given in the email or is there a better address to use?

You can do several different methods.

I used Acrobat to save it as a .txt file and as a .rtf file and then I ran them through libprs500. You can also run the PDF itself through libprs500 with no problems.

You might want to try all three and see which gives you the file size and the readability you want.

It's quick and easy.

I'm thinking that if everyone here who is grumbling about Tor's PDF format books were to email Tor and explain that PDF isn't a good format for them, and that they won't be buying any of Tor's ebooks unless they're in a better format, it might actually have some effect. It would show Tor that there are lots of people interested in their books, but that they're not getting it quite right yet.

That is a great way to put it. So what email address should we use to tell TOR of our dissatisfaction?

Actually that is not the meaning of Kern. It is the meaning of Ligatures. Kern is a term that means the removal of some of the space between letters to make them fit together and look nice on a page but it is not the combining of two letters into one. Kerning can also be applied (I believe) to a technique of adjusting the letter spacing to as a way to achieve full justification, or at least it has a roll in that effort.

Ligatures are, of course related to kerning in the sense of providing a certain 'look' to a page.

libprs500 worked good enough for me on Mistbourne, a few goofed up paragraphs doesn't bother me that much.
