Can't resize calibre 0.7.55 - Page 2

Here's my 2 cents worth. With icon text turned on the smallest the window would "shrink to" is the icon/text bar.

I turned the icon text off and the icons were much smaller and lot's less space between them. The main window now seems to NOT be limited to icons but something else.

Here is a snapshot, notice lot's of room left on icon bar but this is the smallest my window will go. (Which is fine! I operate full screen anyway.)

I love the new "Mac standard" look btw!

(ps: I'm completely redoing my library, thus, only 4 books in the lib!)

Did something different, and (I think) better. Replaced the button with a combo box that gives access to all the editors. See the screen images. Changes are pushed.

Ok, there are a few things going on here. First, when I posted my comment, I'd already re-installed 7.54 so was writing from memory of 7.55 and making some assumptions. I should have included screenshots, but I was assuming others saw the interface the same way I did. I'm now running both so I can do screenshots and compare issues.

It is not 2.5x taller, but it is more than 5 pixels larger as can be seen in my screenshot.
The difference is significantly greater when switching to small icons since the icon bar itself doesn't resize - see screenshot. Yes, I've restarted the app and tried changing other settings, but the bar doesn't resize.

It's also not that there's extra space between the icons - they're all shifted to the right due to the extra gutter space, but when I loaded 7.55, the Help and Preferences icons were gone. When I reinstalled 7.54, they were back. I made the assumption without looking into it that they'd been 'pushed off' the screen. See screenshot. In fact, they're just dropped from the 7.55 interface, and I can put them back.

I didn't even notice until now while comparing screenshots that you have added the Mac menu bar!! Thank you, that's what's been missing this whole time, and I can probably get rid of and get used to using this app without the icons anyway. One issue I did notice though is that the Preferences menu item doesn't actually allow you to load the preferences dialog box. For that, you have to go to Calibre/Preferences. That's confusing.

When I made the 'unusable' comment, it was more in reference to dialog boxes (such as the preferences and the icon toolbar windows) also getting bigger, and outsizing my screen so the buttons on the bottom are inaccessible. See screenshots. I realize now that if I hide the icon bar, then pull up those windows they fit the screen and I can also resize them so they'll fit later if I show the icon bar again.

Do you have a search restricton/saved search/search that is very long? That may be preventing one of the boxes on the search bar from resizing, though I thought I had fixed that a while ago.

Windows XP sp3, calibre 0.7.55

The first thing I looked for was a long restriction/saved search/search entries and none were even remotely too long for the space. I included my minimum size (1143x474) in an attachment.

I'm just providing this for info since I never run like this.

I'm seeing the same behavior as HaoleKai - I have icons set to small and no text.

I tried eliminating the toolbar altogether, but I couldn't figure out how to do some things with only the menu bar. For example, if I'm connected to iTunes, I can see the library by clicking on the device menu item and selecting "show contents of main memory" or something like that. Normally, I would click on the Library icon in the toolbar to get back to see the contents of the Calibre library, but that doesn't work with the menubar option - I get the normal pulldown about switching libraries which isn't what I want to do. I think the library menubar item needs a "show books in main calibre library option".

I see what's causing the problem. It's the donate button. I'll work on a fix for the next release. In the mean time remove the donate (heart) button and click the hide toolbar button on the upper right of the window then click it again to show it. It should be fitting properly with this work around.

Kovid, I've restarted many (many) times. User_none got it - it was the donate button.

Now that it fits properly, let me say how much I love the new Mac-like appearance

The defaults no. You can customize the menu in Preferences, Toolbars, select the menubar from the list of places. You can add any action to the menubar or change the order just like you can with the toolbar.

I added Fetch News to the menu bar (did we Mac users always have this menu bar and I just never knew about it?).

One problem I've found. I mentioned earlier that the Preferences menu item doesn't actually bring up the dialog box. Because of that, I want to delete it from the menu bar to free up space and just use the Calibre/Preferences menu item instead.
The problem is that it won't delete from the menu bar.

I've tried moving it in the bar (it moves fine) then deleting it. It gets reinserted at the end. I've tried restarting the app, I still can't remove it.
Am I missing something or is this a bug?

No. I just added it with the 0.7.55 release. I got tired of calibre looking out of place on OS X. The menubar is also available to Windows and Linux users. But OS X is the only OS with default items in it.

Not a bug. You have to have Preference in one or both of the toolbar or menubar. If you remove it from both it is automatically added back. This is to prevent you from locking yourself out of accessing the preferences dialog.

The preferences menu item is moved to calibre/Preferences automatically by Qt. There is no way I know of to prevent this as that is where OS X says preferences items should be. I also can't add it back to the preferences menu item because of this.

I need to do some testing to get it looking 100% right on OS X. I need to ensure that OS X users can still get to preferences even when it's removed from the menubar and toolbar.

Right, Calibre/Preferences is where it should be, especially since the one on the menu bar doesn't actually allow you to open the dialog box.
