Why? What's the downside for Amazon? If people are going to say the $25 savings isn't worth it, they'll buy the regular Kindle instead. So Amazon doesn't lose out.

Only way it doesn't work for Amazon is if BN drops its regular Nook price below the Kindle-with-ads price. I doubt Amazon expects that.

Which is exactly what I'm doing. The offers I'm taking advantage of are items I planned on buying anyway.

My Kindle will be free; and in a matter of weeks.

I think the KSO will probably be an okay deal for people like tubemonkey, but I don't think this is a case of Amazon giving away Kindles. I'm sure Amazon doesn't expect most people to come out ahead on the deals in the short term. A Kindle is a long-term investment, not a short-term one.

Only if ALL the deals you want are actually available--right away--with no strings attached and no additional monetary outlay. There is absolutely no guarantee of that, although you keep insisting that this ad-riddled Kindle is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Not since sliced bread. Lutefisk, yes; but not sliced bread.

NO. Nothing is free, we know this. We must trace the route the Kindle takes before it ends up in our hands before determining its price. Amazon might one day soon offer us a reading device and only request an email address and some credit card info in return but it will in no way be free. People are dying for these things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I see a lot of people saying "oh, they need to hit $99 before it will have any effect," but the $114 price tag got me considering a Kindle. I haven't had an ebook device since my netbook was stolen, and now I'm looking into possibilities because the "$114 special offer" caught my eye while I was looking at iPod chargers.

Wait... what? People are dying for Kindles?

Is this one of those "capitalism is inherently evil" sort of arguments, or is Bezos/Amazon literally evil and out causing mayhem and distruction?

I was curious if there would be catches to the deals, such as a subscription requirement for the 6 for $6 audiobooks or a minimum purchase necessary to get the $100 gift card for signing up for an Amazon Visa (currently you have to make a 50 dollar purchase to get the 30 dollar credit when you sign up for a Visa through the non-special offer on the site). So I wrote them and asked.

According to the rep, no catches:

To get "$6 for 6 Audible Books (normally $68)" offer you will have to purchase 6 audible books. You need not require any subscription.

A full list of active offers is available from the menu of Kindle with Special Offers at any time.

I hope this helps. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Thank you for your recent inquiry. Did I solve your problem?

Nook wifi (refurbished) is $119 on the B&N eBay store (Amazon-owned Woot was selling it for $99 last week). The wifi+3G is $139. So the price is about there if a refurb is good enough.

But remember the last time B&N dropped the Nook price? by the end of the day, Kindle's price had dropped $10 below theirs. Not sure B&N wants to repeat the experience...

I don't think Bezos loses much sleep thinking about the Nooks.

I think that this is a good idea, I'd have to wait an see what the deals are first. And the price would have to be $99 or less, before it breaks my "mental barrier"

Some of the responses here are funny. "I'm not selling my dignity for $25! It's worth at least 50!"
