@Scarlet - just to back Nyn up on this. The workflow that I recommended to my Dad that I use also is simply "Plug it in" and "Send to device", then "Create collections" (plugin), "Eject", and finally restart the Kindle. Every time he puts the latest batch of books onto it.
We only use plugin generated collections, with any Kindle only ones like ~Reading~ just marked as an exemption in the plugin configuration and only managed on the Kindle itself. Keeps things simple once it is setup. |

More options, more confusion
![]() I'll try to make the workflow clearer in the first post. I've updated it already to make the Create and Edit options separate. In general if you use Create Collections you won't use Edit Collections and vice versa. The only exception is if you have a Currently Reading collection or other collection on the Kindle that you want to manually update on the Kindle - in this case if you want to modify the collection using the plugin you need to use the Edit option. |

@meme - perhaps putting a menu separator between them too might help. Right now the natural instinct for some people may be to think I use "Create" once, and then use "Edit" afterwards. Which as you say is not correct

The only thing I do differently than Kiwidude is I use the book sync plugin. When I add new books to the library, I use that plugin to maintain a list of books that need to go on the kindle on the next restart of Calibre, then I use this plugin to update the collections.
PS: I am actually surprised Kiwidude doesn't use it, since he is the one that created the plugin. ![]() |

There already is. Its a little clearer in my test version as I group Create/Preview/Customize as one, and View/Edit as another and added some text. I've just completed all my changes - but I'll look at this again to make sure its clear. Now for some thorough testing and reviewing before releasing it this weekend.

![]() @meme - my sincere apologies, I should have plugged in the Kindle to check before posting. I went on memory, and my memory was that the two menu items were extremely similar by name and I knew I was going to have to carefully explain it to Dad. I liked the old simplicity of just clicking on the button rather than choosing from a menu of a whole bunch of stuff that he will never use and one menu option he (and I) will always use ![]() |

Thanks for clarifying. I'm using the tags I created in calibre to base my collections on, as well.

I can understand wanting to just click the button once you've setup things. But with many people using Edit, and wanting to avoid accidentally running it when trying to click the menu item, using the menu seems the safest option. At least Create is the first entry ![]() |

You are welcome. As for the second paragraph, take a read of posts #557 and 559 two pages back, that should explain the whole ~Reading~ thing.

Not posting on Kindle 3, pls HELP
Been trying all night. Have plugin working on latest ver. Calibre, Windows XP Pro. Copied files to kindle w/calibre, have custom column of genre, tags, etc. Tried all fixes for the issue of no collections showing on Kindle - regarding news feeds and magazines, but still nothing shows up. Eject, unplug, restart kindle, no go. Changed personal doc tag from [PDOCS] to News, [CUSTOM], didn't work. Am I supposed to use the brackets? Quotes?
Also tried deleting and recreating the files, no go. Here's the output I'm getting through calibre: http://pastebin.com/cTPZV09S Thoughts? ![]() |

But in any case, if you are trying to get Periodicals to show up in collections - they won't in version 1.4.3 due to a bug. The next version, which should be out today or tomorrow will include a fix for this |

Yes, just that example was preview, I did send files first, then did create to kindle. Got a couple periodicals to appear, but ONE of them fails. Not sure why just the one. Is that bug you mentioned to blame for sporadic periodical issues? Last edited by layoric; 04-15-2011 at 07:40 AM. Reason: added info |

Not sure about the periodical issue - best to wait and try it on the new version.
