Hi niluje,
Thanks to you and the others involved in the jailbreak, screensaver and fonts hacks. Nice work and simple to install. I've been busy the last couple of days converting all of the DigitalBlasphemy Iphone 4 sized wallpaper set (these were the closest aspect and scaled images) to 600x800, black and white and .png and stamping them with watermarking software to have my name and phone number and a slide to wake message at the bottom and I'm really pleased with the result. ![]() I have one issue with the screensaver hack. It's only a minor one. The random feature doesn't work if I drop a "random" file in the linkss folder on my Kindle 3 (f/w 3.1), nor does it reboot if I drop a reboot file in there. Dropping files in the linkfonts folder seems to work as expected; e.g. reboot or light/bci etc. Any ideas on this? Also, is there a hack that will ensure that if someone uses the "resetmykindle" trick at the password screen, the machine will reset and still have a default password set so a thief wouldn't be able to use it regardless? |

@Freakstone: If you have both the fonts & ss hacks, then yes, the reboot will have to be put in the linkss folder. The random feature isn't affected by this though, so make sure you're using the latest version and you're doing everything correctly

@Freakstone: Nope, the random file has to be in the linkss folder. Make sure there's no hidden extension on the file you're putting there, and that you're doing a proper full restart, a framework restart (triggered by the autoreboot feature) won't suffice.

@NiLuJe: Ahhh. Only a full restart will *reshuffle* the screensavers, I see now. The random feature just forces a prefix rename of the files on boot during a full restart. So any time I do a framework restart from now it'll start at the beginning of the current order of images and cycle through them in order til my next full restart?
I'd done a full restart after putting the random file in but then every framework restart after that the order was the same. I'd expected it to actually pick an image at random every time. Now I see how the random works I get it. Cheers. |

I love the default font. Everybody has their own choices, though, and my guess is that Amazon was preparing a way for users to choose their own font in future Kindles (as seen in reader.pref)

Seeing as there are, er, 112 pages of this thread, and Google-fu has failed me, I’ll just ask. Links to pre-existing answers are welcome.
How difficult is it to convert an existing font into one that can be dropped into the Kindle fonts-hack folder? There’s a font that’s utterly useless, but that the geek in me totally wants to play with, for at least a brief time, on the Kindle. If it were likely to be useful to anybody else I’d ask someone who knows what they're doing to convert it for me, but I somehow doubt its appeal to a broad audience… So if I had no choice but to do it myself, is there a lot of skilled tweaking/grunt-work/proprietary software involved, or can it be fairly straightforward? This is the specific font I’m looking at, ahem…: http://davidocchino.com/portfolio/ty.../aurebesh.html |

New ad-supported Kindle...
Interesting development in Kindle-land:
Amazon announces ad-supported Kindle for $114 It appears that Amazon will use the screensavers for advertising on these devices, which begs the questions (which I know currently have no answer) ... 1) What will happen if someone tries to install the screensaver hack on one of these, 2) How will the warranty/terms of use be different on these devices, and 3) How will non-ad devices be affected... |

Oh, you can just rename existing .ttf files and you're good? I was somehow under the impression it was a lot more involved than that... Cool, thanks!

@willswords: We'll see... I'm actually hoping this'll help us devising a way to switch screensavers 'on the fly' without having to reload the framework, because I don't see them inflicting a framework restart on users everytime a new ad comes out... :}
@Snorkledorf: Yup, on the K3 (or when using an FT override), you can even use non-TrueType fonts (ie. CFF OpenType), so long as you keep to the naming scheme (including switching the extension to .ttf, even if they're not really TrueType). |

I've been lurking on here for a bit, and trying to execute the fonts hack. I would love to try the georgia2 font.
However, I'm coming unstuck. I can't actually find the georgia2 font anywhere. The only page has the fonts for Kindle2, but I have a k3. Also, when I complete the hack, I'm not actually too sure what fonts I should be changing if I just want the reader font to change ? It all seems very confusing ? ? Please can someone help. |
