I almost wish that were the right answer, Dreams! It's more interesting than the real one.
![]() No, she didn't escape. And it wasn't really weird. But it had never happened in New Zealand before, and it has never happened since. And probably never will. |

What might you expect to have happened in 1895 to a person found guilty of murder?

I guess she was executed (hanged?)
so murder, she was a farmer. Did she hit someone over the head with a shovel and got hanged for that? |

Clues:
Spoiler:
---------------------- Oh, good guess, harakiri! That makes sense that she was probably hanged. ![]() I'm stuck on the "farmer" part. Did she use the murder victim(s) as compost and sold the farm produce or animal meat to the townspeople? |

The only thing that I can think of in that era that could be called 'íllegal farming' was what was called 'baby farming'.
Desperate single women used to pay for their children (usually illegitimate - horrid word) to be brought up in the country. Sometimes the children were murdered, but the farmer kept getting money. There was a case in South Africa. Just a thought. |

Dreams, you should write a book! Your ideas are marvellous.
![]() Nohmi's right: Minnie Dean was a baby farmer. She was found guilty of murdering a child in her care, and was hanged. She was the only woman ever executed in New Zealand, and as New Zealand hasn't had the death penalty for over fifty years she's likely to keep that distinction. This was a scandalous case in its day. I refer to the newspaper accounts of it in one of my books. It's quite possible that Dean was not guilty: infant mortality was high, and it was common (and dangerous) to use laudanum to keep children quiet. The deaths may well have been accidental. But there was little sympathy for baby farmers, whom some people saw as "encouraging sin". And when the judge told the jury (all male in those days) that it would be "weak-kneed" of them to bring a verdict of manslaughter, her fate was sealed. Miniature hatboxes containing baby dolls were sold outside the courtroom during her trial. Poor taste is not a modern phenomenon. More on Minnie Dean: http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/2d7/1 Oh, and congratulations Harakiri! You're right. Last edited by Shayne Parkinson; 04-13-2011 at 04:27 AM. |

I never would have guessed baby farmer, as I had never heard of that. That was fun, thanks for the link.
![]() I also found this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnie_Dean and the referenced song: Dudley Benson's 2006 song "It's Akaroa's Fault" ("I don't want to meet Minnie Dean at the end of my life/If I were to meet her I'd keep her hatbox in sight").: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Eua3zqMQXU |

I think it maybe a stick that you use to make a hole in the ground before you plant the baby.
