Ugh. There are so few places left that are free of advertising. I want my Kindle, and my headspace, to be among them. And, pragmatically speaking, I think the homepage is cramped enough without having to reduce the available real estate to accommodate an advert. (I wish upon a star that we could reset font size on the homepage/menus and not just in the e-texts. Well... stars are pretty...) Not an issue in any case, since I live outside the US, but even if I were a resident I'd respond with a big NO ;-) However I do recognise that I have the economic privilege to choose the more expensive option. If I were counting my every penny, who knows... |

I had it, actually! I was a poor student at the time. No, I wouldn't buy the kindle with the ads. I think of myself as a hard-core reader, and I don't mind spending extra to get the device that suits me best. I don't mind ads on free iPad apps though, for what it's worth.

Yea, but what about the $10 for $20 Amazon.com Gift Card? My own dignity is definitely worth less that $35. It could almost be tempting, as I will be giving our son my 3G to take to Europe this summer and keep in touch by email. Actually, though, if I was going to buy an eReader without 3G internet, an $80 reconditioned Nook that can host DRM'd library books sounds better. |

"Dignity and an empty sack is worth the sack." According to the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition, at least. Along with "Once you have their money, never give it back." Maybe there'll be no upgrade path to switch the ads off the Kindle short of buying a new, ad-free one? |

You know, some are there some are gone, some are straight some are crooked, some are green some are brown, and so on. And as to a K3 with ads, no more a bother than existing screen savers so sure if I were buying a K3 I would save the cash and buy a few books with it. Add to that the savings already mentioned and it's a no-brainer to the non-sanctimonious who know the value of a dollar, about 3-cents by last count, ...every penny saved is a few minutes less you have to work in your life. I retired from real work at forty just about a decade ago and don't really need to ever work another day in my life because I was conscious of every savings I could take advantage of. And I never denied myself anything, eventually. Patience is the key and with this device I say wait until fall and it might well be free. Buy now if you can use the already mentioned deals otherwise wait. Last edited by grumpy3b; 04-13-2011 at 05:27 AM. | |

I hope this is not a bad move for Amazon. 25 dollars is not a significant amount of money, not in my opinion, in order to get the new Kindle 3 with ads. Something close to 80 or 90 bucks would be easier to tolerate and a substantial price drop. I even think the ads will be distracting and intrusive. Thanks, but no thanks. |

Remember banner killers like Beware of the Dog or Screaming Broccoli? If one of our benevolent devs came up with something like that, sure, saving $25 might be worth it. But for today, no way. With ads on the homescreen, nope, I'd rather pay the premium. |

Guys till someone has actually used this $114 kindle, we can't know for sure how intrusive these adds are. I don't think people would mind adds as screen savers.

I think the $114 Kindle is a great option for people. I know $25 doesn't sound like much, but I remember when I was a struggling single mother raising 3 children, and $25 was a BIG deal to me at that time. This might mean the difference between someone getting a Kindle or not having one at all.

I plan on picking up one. Being one who loves to shop, I don't mind the ads and am happy about the lower price!

True. I have been thinking about thus kindle for the past day, and it is starting to sound more and more appealing to me. I'd have to try one out, first.
