The EU directive itself, AFAIK, does not forbid DRM removal for personal use. But this is largely irrelevant. The individual member states' legislations are what's important, and those may very well forbid DRM removal for any reason, ever. What legislation and jurisdiction there is on the topic makes it clear that posting links to software that allows you to remove DRM is in fact illegal in several jurisdictions, e.g. in Germany.

That said, the relevant questions is this: what is the law at the places where this forum is hosted and where the forum owner lives?

MobileRead is hosted in Canada. So far as I know, DRM removal is not illegal in Canada.

ConvertLit can be used on LIT files which have not been massively DRM'd. And I don't think most people go around detailing how to make it do so. Look, if it were up to me and I knew that people weren't going to suffer legal action because of their use, I'd post decrypters for eReader, Mobipocket, Sony LRF and Kindle. I loathe DRM.

But I'm not going to do so because someone could use them and get thrown in jail. I don't want or need the bad karma.

And don't look to me for the pointer to the forum policies - I haven't looked at them in ages. Besides, you can clearly go through and find them with a bit of effort.

So they exist in written form and can be found? My suspicion was that they did not exist other than spread out in a lot of postings and that different persons had different ideas about what the policies were.

The question was mentioning things that was possible to do. Remember not to mention driving cars here at the forum since people that are not allowed to drive cars might be encouraged to do it. And you do not want to be responsible for them being thrown in jail.

I've used it and it works great.
Thanks a lot ProfJulie, that solved the problem. This little application works like a charm! ........

What we want to try to do if we can is to not post a reply to someone who we know lives in a country where using such tools are illegal. I know it won't be possible to do this 100% as not everyone puts in the location. So we can only try to do what's right. But if someone from a country that removing the DRM is illegal and does it, it's not our fault.

That is rather unhelpful. Why do you assume that the person asking a question is in the country he usually live in? And what about everybody else reading the thing that could use the answer?

Why would you assume that if someone did put a location in their profile they would be somewhere else? That makes much less sense than assuming someone is where they said they are.

It may or may not be legal for other people to use that information too.

It's just simplest to work from Derek's principle of not giving people advice that could land them in jail. Anything else is just adding needless complications and smacks of arguing for argument's sake.

Maybe a mod should split this thread: it was intended for a cover image issue, not for a DRM issue.

After all the problem was not a sync problem, the editor of the e- book just did NOT put in a proper library thumbnail, so I made one with Ashalan's tool (Tnx. Ashalan)
And the problem had NOTHING to do with DRM rights in Holland.....
