I suspect that at some point, all Kindles will be ad supported (hopefully with the option to pay to upgrade to an ad free version via firmware update).

For a wi-fi only version? No way, not for a measly $25 discount. We were just talking about getting my husband a 3G Kindle of his own (he has no access to wi-fi at his job, where he spends 48 hours at a time) and I'd consider paying that amount for one of those.

$99 wouldn't be too bad, but $25 discounts for a lifetime of advertisements is not much. However, getting a $20 Amazon Gift Card for $10 sounds like a good deal... anyone know where I can get this deal?

They have that teaser graphic to entice you to opt for the ad-filled version. Their approach is "let's put up a $20 for $10 Amazon gift card graphic on our promo materials to generate interest in this 'With Special Offers' version of our Kindle (i.e. not 'Ad Filled')."

The emotional response they are looking to create is "hey, how can I get that deal??" Welp, you must buy the ad supported version of the Kindle and hope this $20 for $10 deal ever pops up. I'm not falling for it.

Verrry sneaky, AMZN.

Why don't you go to www.amazon.com?

They have also got pictures of what the ads look like: on the screensaver page or the bottom of the home page and NEVER while you are reading!

This is probably not what people had in mind by 'custom screensaver images'.

I agree that a $25 discount does not seem that attractive, but I guess it depends on the value and frequency of the 'special offers' - a variable which obviously Amazon will be adjusting carefully.

I think I'm fairly ad-resistant myself, so if I were in the market for a new Kindle, I would consider this model. But only if it were available in white of course.
