You know what, i think Orlok basically got it:

As a kid he fell down a stair, like in those slapstick comedies. Where you think the guy must have broken all bones in his body.
Harry Houdini (the Magician) was present and said: "That was a real buster!"

Keatons dad then decided to call his kid "Buster". One must say that Keatons parents were Vaudeville actors with a show. It turned out that young Buster was virtually indestructible. So part of the show was that his dad actually threw his Kid around:

"The young Keaton would goad his father by disobeying him, and the elder Keaton would respond by throwing him against the scenery, into the orchestra pit, or even into the audience. A suitcase handle was sewn into Keaton's clothing to aid with the constant tossing. The act evolved as Keaton learned to take trick falls safely; he was rarely injured or bruised on stage. This knockabout style of comedy led to accusations of child abuse, and occasionally, arrest. However, Buster Keaton was always able to show the authorities that he had no bruises or broken bones. He was eventually billed as "The Little Boy Who Can't Be Damaged," with the overall act being advertised as "'The Roughest Act That Was Ever in the History of the Stage."

OK - we all like to laugh at cartoons printed in magazines, like the New Yorker. But using the term cartoon to describe such an image is a far cry from the original meaning of cartoon - which was a full size drawing on heavy paper or pasteboard made by Renaissance artists, and used to create frescoes or complicated paintings.

Which magazine coined the term "cartoon" in its modern sense -- a humorous illustration in print media?
