Well, not everyone lives in America and not everyone own just a cheap Kindle. While the 150$ argument might be true for you, Paola is Italian and paid 419€ for her Pocketbook 903 that is 606$. In case you are still laughing I suggest you buy her a new one if hers breaks. Sometimes it is a good idea to engage ones brains and not only ones fingers when answering a post. |

I think we can transfer the phrase from cameras here:
It (the device) can take less than you wish and more than you think. ![]() Personally I bought a cheap, padded soft cover from eBay (€13,- incl s&h) where I put my kindle while not in use. I do not treat it as I would nitroglycerine but I'm still "average" carefull with it. Up to now, the Kindle is still unscratched and in one piece. ![]() I also own a fairly expensive dSLR (insured), which doubles up as a sledgehammer. (It took me abt 6 hrs to get my first scratch on the body) |

I've had my Sont PRS 505 for over 2 years. It has gone through multiple airlines in carry-on, it has seen monthly weekend trips away from home, and the worst it has seen was 3 months deployed to Iraq. Worst damage it saw was the original vinyl cover broke its binding, and I have replaced the cover with a new one.
I always keep it in its cover. For trips, I have a home-made rigid box that it goes in to prevent damage from packing it next to my laptop. Vic |

So not a bad idea at all! Maybe not for daily use, but for more "extreme" conditions! (And I agree with Poppaea, please remember that in Europe, and probably other places outside USA as well, we can only dream of finding a reader for under $200.) |

A good point this. It makes me regularly grind my teeth when I see some nice gadgets announced, and find out later that, when bought in EU the only change on the price tag is the currency symbol, or worse - they are even more expensive than 1:1.

I always kept my iPad in the official Apple cover but I didn't like it cause it was hard to hold while open (reading) and when I put it on my home-made cardboard stand the cover caused it to wobble and lean no matter what I did. As a result I got rid of the fancy cover. Now I use it without the cover. When not in use I just slip it into into a padded Jiffy Mailer (Bubble Mailer). My iPad fits perfectly into a #2 mailer.

From what I have read on larger e-ink devices (mine is 9.7''), aside from travel, even handling the device "improperly" (e.g. taking it from one corner - it is large, so the weight from the opposite corner may bend it) might break the screen - unless the guy I read about has been plain unlucky. This is really the paranoia that prompted my initial question: traveling aside, is tehre aything you should never do when reading? By the way, when you move to large screens, e-ink readers are sexpensive in the US too (not quite as in Europe, but around $400 - this is the rumored price for te Pocketbook 903 and the Onyx Boox M90). |

My Nook is about 9 months old, so far, so good. I do have it in an Oberon cover (but no wool felt on mine) and I also bought a nice padded bag for it (Tom Bihn iPad Ristretto), since A) I needed a new bag badly and B) Nook goes everywhere with me.
Mine has fallen off a chair while in the bag, no problem. I take it around with me everywhere. However, I have had one of my cats walk on it a couple times, which scares me every time it happens! She's not the lightest cat either. I usually try to close the cover if she comes around, but sometimes she's quicker than I am, especially if I've been reading in bed. She's also trod on it while the cover is closed. Hubby dropped his Nook in the original BN cover, no damage. More recently, he fell on a concrete walkway while carrying his Nook in its Oberon cover (also no wool felt on his), though he did his best while falling to set the Nook down and apparently succeeded, because it is still working fine. However, because of the cats, we did get the extended warranty, so if we broke our Nooks, we could get them replaced. Of course, now that refurb Nooks are so cheap, I'm thinking we could've saved our money on the warranty... but hubby felt better about getting it at the time. At any rate, the devices have been sturdy, knock on wood! |

OT: I received the replacement screen I had ordered for my android tablet. But after opening it and trying to fit it on the tablet, I realized the touchscreen frame is a bit too big to fit on tablet's case even with a lot of pressure.
![]() Yesterday night I spent a lot of time "modding" the touchscreen. Filed the edges, snipped off the knobs from the frame, cut the case with a hot knife - its has been a tough job. Few milimeters away from making it fit into the tablet casing. I hope the touchscreen does not break again while I do this. |

I got my Sony 505 in late October, 2008. I had a factory case for it, and I carried it in my purse pretty much *every* day of its life with me. Within the past month, there's been some undefined accident that caused the top right corner of the screen to be blank. There are very thin lines going out across the top and up and down the side from the corners of the box. I've NO idea what happened. I do vaguely recall that it once slid down the dresser and perhaps hit the (carpeted) floor, and I'm guessing it hit the corner and that caused this breakage? It's still usable, but I miss a word or two, depending on where the text falls. I'm bummed about it, it's been perfect until this happened.
![]() I'm going to try to attach a picture (first time trying that). In the picture, the blank square is in the top left (the image is reversed, as you can see from the words). Now I really need a nice black 650 to fall into my lap! Where's the ereader fairy?? (it looks like the words fade out towards the bottom, but that's because I used the photo booth on my mac and the flash made the words fade out) |
