Just finished (a rarity lately) The World Inside by Robert Silverberg. It was my first read of one of his books. Thought the subject was interesting and original for 1970. It isn't hard to imagine how differently the residents of the urbmons would react to their environment. While not unexpected I did think Silverberg presented the various outcomes in an intelligent and precise manner. His word usage/creation was very good ... blessmen, consolers, nightwalking, multiplexer, liftshaft, vibrastar, etc.
I must say the book contained too much "topping" for my taste. Not sure if he was going for the shock value (it was written during era of "free love") or he felt it was necessary to portray a post-privacy world. Enjoyed it overall and will seek out more of his work. Any recommendations? |

I love silverberg my favorite of his was time travel stories -- "Up the Line" is the one I remember enjoying a lot. I don't think he wrote many bad stories at all!

Thanks I'll add it to my list.
Next I'll try Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood. My first with this author. |

The synopsis is that it's about a man who spends his life being put upon by others, and meekily accepts his lot. Then one day he picks up a hitchhiker (I think - I read this over 30 years ago..) who shares his world view with him (and some hallucinogens?) explaining that the human "stew" is not made up of lots of different shaped potatoes, but has potatoes, carrots and onions, and each is different, so stop expecting them all to act in the same way. After this epiphany, he starts to stand up for himself, with, as they say, hilarious results. Would love to read it again, if anyone can point me in the right direction? They are getting a little grim, not so much in their actual events but in the background assessment of human nature. A couple of train journeys mean I'm nearly finished with the next book, and I think I'll need a break from the series before going on. |

I am about 1/2 through The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet and it is amazing and I really want to finish it today. However, I am listening to the eAudiobook of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, which I got from the library, because I have a lot of yardwork and housework to do today so I am listening while I do that. In fact, gotta go. ;?P

Getting ready to re-read "A Feast for Crows" by George R. R. Martin. I thought about holding off until just before the next book comes out, but I've only read this one once before and remember very little of it. Next up is "Conan the Cimmerian" by Robert E. Howard, and I've been chomping at the bit to start this one.
You guys are really bringing back some memories for me. "The World Inside" is one of my favorites, and I love "Frost and Fire!" Harlan Ellison's "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" is another one I read when I was a kid that has always stuck with me. |

I've got that one. Incredible. And his chronology of writing some of them is wonderful!

I finished Blood Meridan, by Cormack McCarthy, and started The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolaño (in translation, unfortunately).
