I joined the Doubleday Book Club a few weeks ago.

I got five books for $14.69 including shipping. That's $2.94 each. One book is a collection of three novels, and another is a current New York Times fiction top ten.

I have an obligation to buy four books in the next year at the regular member's price. The regular price is usually 40% off the MSRP.

I plan to buy the four books for birthday and wedding presents in the next couple of months.

After that I will be free to quit.

So to answer your question, it's primarily about the money. But I do enjoy reading a hardcopy.

I still buy books from an awesome secondary market in CT: The Bookbarn.

When we go camping, that's usually my first stop... pick up a couple of books for $1 each, sit in my chair all week and read!

Generally now, I don't buy pbooks, except as:
a) presents for friends;
b) geriatric artifacts for conversion to ebooks

Gifts from other people are my main source of paper books. I have bought ebooks of gifted paper books just to be able to read them on my Kindle.

I plan to buy all paper books of "The Monster Blood Tattoo" series by Cornish, specifically because it has beautiful line art in the books.

I don't read any other series with a strong art component, but if I found any, I would buy paper books for those.

today I was made to buy in a Charity shop - A hard backed version of the first 3 Dune books by Frank Herbert (based on threads I'd read on here) for 75p. Also got a book called Here be Dragons by Sharon Penman and another book which I intend to give to my mother for Christmas - total outlay - £1.75.

Although Dune will have to be "at home" reading coz it's a bit of a hefty tome.

Impulsivity...

Title, graphic, photos, subject matter - not particularly in that order. Being a principle non-fiction reader most of my interests are not in ebook formats.

Nothing. No more room for books - my bookcases are all full, and I don't intend to spend time rearranging them to get more in. If it isn't available in ebook form, I order it from the library. That way, I can return it without the guilt that comes from throwing away a book (I have never done it, just thought about it).

I still buy Superman or DC Universe graphic novels. The large pictures are better to look at as a physical book instead of on an eReader.

Bargain price. If a hard back $20.00 book is discounted to $10.00 or less, and it is on a subject I like, then sure why not.

Impulse buying, bargain books (remainder hard-covers), reference books, books that I can't find as ebooks or are significantly cheaper to buy as pbooks.

My answer might change if I ever treat myself to a tablet computer or iPad, but for knitting and other crafting books, I prefer the pbook versions. Otherwise, I feel like I'm missing out on the full-color photography that makes me say, "Oh, I want to make THAT!" (I'm sure that the cooks among us feel the same way). Plus, a lot of the lace knitting books that I like have ridiculously complicated charts that would end up being a pain to read on the Kindle's 6 inch screen.

I primarily buy paper books as gifts for people who aren't into ereaders. For me it's ebooks or the library. Recently I bought the fourth edition of "Basic Economics" by Thomas Sowell in paper because the library only has the first edition and he has added 200 pages to it over the four revisions.
