...not really. In both cases the clerk is saying that the stock of iPads they have for sale is currently depleted. As long as they're saying the have none to sell they're fine on the truth standard. It's not uncommon for stores to have stock that's not currently for sale on hand - and when that happens they don't have any to sell.

When I went into Borders right before HP7 was released they had a big crate of copies on the sales floor - but they had none to sell - not that day at least.

It seems very silly to artificially declare something "out of stock" for the day when there's a whole pile of them sitting in the back. If I ever discovered a store was making me return later because they'd met their daily quota and just wanted to get me in the store again... well, I'd probably never shop there again. It's underhanded and shady.

You guys can argue technicalities on truthiness all you want, but as a consumer, if a business is wasting my time for no reason, I'm not shopping there.

I wouldn't shop there either - I don't think it's appropriate and my time is worth too much to let them get away with that kind of crap.

lol, Best Buy? Just their name alone is false advertising. Definitely not my preferred outlet for electronics.

Much agreement here. If BB is going to be that way, Target and Wal-Mart sell iPads, too...

Never really been a fan of Best Buy for other reasons, but if they did what the article is detailing... Man, they suck.

Sounds like Apple needs to just declare the iPads are sold under the agency model. Then they can control retail just like a publisher.

Personally, I think that it is a rather stupid way of doing business. What is going to stop the customer from going to the next place that has the IPad and get it from there? That is a completely lost sale. Again, rather stupid.

Exactly. The BB in my town is right next to a Target. They both sell iPads. Assuming I wanted an iPad and BB told me no, I'd just go to Target.

Apple consistently turns the spigot on and off for retailers.

And let's face it, lots of retailers do a crap job with products like this, especially compared to Apple's own retail outlets. The ebook device displays are particularly bad in many stores.
