I asked what was causing the problem, and he referred me to the ADE user forums for help (in other words, we won't help you but maybe one of our customers can ). I ended up uninstalling ADE, and deleting all registry entries and folders pertaining to the program. I reinstalled the program and authorized my account. I closed the program and opened it again...where the setup assistant proceeded to run again, telling me I needed to activate my account. ADOBE STINKS!

As an IT professional, I've never been a fan of their products, this debacle only confirms my distaste. (Don't get me started on their bandwidth chewing auto update that seems to happen weekly. Do you know what it does to your network bandwidth when 250 computers decided to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader all at the same time!!! )

So...Python is my new best friend along with Calibre. Please forgive the rant...I needed to vent. I'm better now...really, I am...can you take this coat off of me...it seems the sleeves are missing....

Nice take on DRM but the way some around here rant about Amazon it is so ironic to see the real issues of their precious DRM epub files thanks to their connection with Adobe a company that could care less about customer satisfaction. They never have and never will. Adobe is no different today than 25 years ago, arrogant and on par with Apple in this regard.

Why can't we rant about all the A-named companies: Adobe AND Amazon AND Apple?

Hmmm...Maybe there is something about a name beginning with the letter "A" that makes a company evil? Hester Prynne unavailable for comment?

Check out the guarantee on our own wee house's bookstore, Craig. It says this:

A PROMISE TO OUR EBOOK BUYERS

Should you buy a BeWrite Books ebook from a third party-retailer rather than from our own site, you might find (through no fault or desire on our part) that it is locked by store-imposed Digital Rights Management (DRM) software. We feel this restricts your legitimate owner's rights. So if you ever encounter this problem, simply let us know and we will freely send you the DRM-free version of that title in the format of your choice (evidence of original purchase would help us identify the errant stores, but isn't strictly necessary for this offer to be fulfilled). BeWrite Books and its authors want you to be able to share our ebooks with friends and family as you might share our paperbacks. We want you to be able to easily convert ebooks to any format you like, to read them on whichever device you like, wherever you like, whenever you like. We trust you not to make a business of it, but to fairly use a BB ebook as you would a BB treebook. BB reckons you own the ebook you bought – you've not merely licensed it with strings attached. DRM is not only an inconvenience to you but a downright insult. We'll put it right. That's a promise. And those who know us will attest to the fact that BB never breaks its promises.

Tony Szmuk (Publisher) & Neil Marr (Editor in Chief)

I reckon that puts it pretty simply and honestly. We are even considering this paragraph for our conditions page on all BeWrite Books ebook titles (120 in 350 ebook editions at any given time) so that nobody's ever taken by surprise. Cheers. Neil

I have been on an "Adobe boycott" for several years. Their programs are unnecessarily big, use too much processor power and generally stink. So it's a great annoyance to have to have an Adobe ID. I don't use ADE, but even if I let Reader Library handle my DRM infected files I need the ID, and it bugs the **** out of me! So I hear you people!

I have a Kindle, so many of the books I buy have DRM. For as long as it takes to clean them, which is a few seconds. I would certainly prefer that they not have DRM, but I don't make a big deal about it, I just remove it. I buy books (or borrow from local library) based on the author and the quality of the book, not the DRM or not. But I also make sure that what I buy, I can use any where, any time.
