I haven't been posting in here often, but I enjoy following this thread. I just finished Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition by Daniel Okrent. There are a lot of amusing anecdotes showing that Prohibition didn't work. Almost too many jam-packed sentences with quotes though.

I've started reading Triangle: The Fire that Changed America by David von Drehle.

Bob, that list of winners really takes me back. I think that Paladin of Souls is the only one that I've missed over the years. One surprise to me is that The Gods Themselves was '70's. I thought it was earlier. I owned that book since I was a kid.

Thanks again, guys!
Yeah, but you're just a youngster.

Just read Death of a Spaceman by Walter M. Miller, a very touching story from the 50s.
Next I think I will read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert A Heinlein!

Assortet humor collections (Dave Barry, David Sedaris, Mark Levengoud, Kalle Lund and others - I find I enjoy them more when mixing them and not read too many texts from the same person in a row)

Hey, I knew that title looked familiar. I enjoyed that series, though the science is stronger than the writing in a couple spots. Still a good way to spend some time, hope you enjoy it too.

Another Hugo-award-winning short story from the 50s is Eric Frank Russell's Allamagoosa. Nothing profound but it's fun and worth reading.
The science fictional element is standard 50s SF, but we can still relate to the story of bureaucratic red tape.

Reading "Pride & Prejudice: Dawn of the Dreadfuls". Seemed like such a strange combination of classic and kooky that I thought I'd have a go. Quite amusing so far - I will persevere for now.

I just finished the Fantasy book: Kings of the North in the Paks-series by Elisabeth Moon. This book was even better than the previous one: Oath of Fealty which follows directly on the original Deed of Paksenarrion. I was afraid it would have a cliff-hanger ending in anticipation of the next book but the book ends without any big cliff-hanger ending and I will definitely come back to read the next book when it is published.

It was previously said to be a trilogy but reading this interview with Moon it seems she has decided to turn it into 5 books.

Casually reading Invasion by Mercedes Lackey et al. It's the first in the Secret World Chronicle series. Read 60 pages and haven't formed an opinion yet.

Oh, good news. And even better - it's available in the UK Kindle store for £4.49. Considering it includes VAT, that's an excellent price.

I'm off to buy a book!

Well, I stopped reading Invasion after 80 pages or so. When "angelic warriors" materialized to help the Allies kill modern day Nazis, it was evident that this book was not the type of sci-fi I was anticipating.

Next I'll try The World Inside by Robert Silverberg.
