No "derived" about it . Amazon's AZW format is plain ordinary Mobipocket.

Ah ha! Thanks very much. I'm looking at it now!

I've really enjoyed the legal discussion/debate in this thread, but I'm posting to thank everyone involved in the DRM removal discussion as well. I just got my first library books onto my Kindle and it's working out great. The Mobi format books were simple drag n drop into Calibre, the Adobe ones were a more involved process but I had those up and running within about 30 minutes. Pretty easy for me, but maybe too complex for a lot of people. I guess it's good advice that if your primary goal is reading library books then Kindle isn't the way to go unless you're willing to learn the procedure and jump through a few hoops.

I read library books on my Kindle without removing the DRM. They expire just like regular. Of course, I had to hunt a little to find a library that uses a compatible format, mobibooks. I followed the instructions in tip #3 here.

Works like a charm, and quick too!

No, it's the same DRM mechanism that any other Mobipocket book uses.

Not hot. By this time, the OP has run out of time to return her husband's Kindle gift. What a pity: he's stuck with the best e-reader and the largest selection of commercial ebooks from any source. But, with the money saved buying ebooks over pbooks, there may already be cash in the cookie jar to buy a Kobo and start enjoying library books on this second ereader ... not to mention saving a few dollars with Kobo's discount codes.

(Hey! Having just read 15 pages of this thread, I had to post something ....)

I think that the OP got her initial question wrong.

If she had asked "Kindle or nookie" most of the problems could have been avoided

If that was the choice she regretted making for her husband, then, I don't blame her. I mean, as a husband, I love my Kindle, but...

I believe he punishment for re-opening an old thread should be death. Or have your e-reader thrown in the river or something.

normally I agree, but as this is being re-argued I felt it was valid
