			This concerned me too.

I have noticed that the word Kindle is already being widely used as a generic word for eReader. Amazon might like that, but they should beware. I have heard that some companies have lost the right to enforce their brand names because of widespread generic use. Xerox, for example, seems to be concerned about that as they encourage people to call a copier a copier, not a xerox machine. |

No doubt I'm giving this more thought than it deserves, but what bothers me most is the implication that those over 50 are coots who are unfamiliar with/unfriendly to technology. That's just nonsensical. Over 75, perhaps, since they would have been retiring just when pc use exploded (and my 80-year old aunt is playing games on Facebook at midnight every night), but placing the bar at 50 seems absurdly young to me. People have had pcs for well over ten years now--just how young did you have to be when you got your first one not to be considered in your dotage now?

And then there's the legitimate practical aspect, that those with changing eyesight are an obvious market for a device that lets them increase font size. I find that those in their 50s and 60s have been enthusiastic adapters, not laggards. |

I filled them in as best I could, but the "will you purchase an ereader" was weird when I already mentioned I had two devices I read on.

Now, now, you're 50+, so you don't own an ebook reader. And if you do, it's a Kindle. The survey says so.

I'm 47 and I do not own a Kindle. My mother is 83 and she owns a Sony. My mother-in-law is in her 60s and owns a Sony. My wife is close to 50 and uses an iPad.

So really, the bias that only a kindle is good for 50+ is ridiculous. |

For those of us 50+ types a bit upset by the implications of this survey, maybe a little exercise would help de-stress (apologies for repeating from another thread):

EXERCISE FOR PEOPLE OVER 50... Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-pound potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-pound potato bags. Then try 50-pound potato bags and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-pound potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level.) After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag! . |
