Not sure what to do with the Soft Keys, they seem to be more trouble than they are worth, but I must figure how to remove them.
The defaults for SoftKeys doesn't seem to flow very well with the nook color. But it is customizable. I was a bit frustrated with it until I tweaked the settings... now it works as well as can be expected for a device without hard buttons.

Here's a link to a post that helped me get clarity on how to use Soft Keys:

I heard that rooting your Nook Color voids warranty! Is this right?

Not just voids the warranty -- the B&N goons will visit one moonless night to take if from your nightstand while a low voice warns you against ever rooting another device...

But worst case scenario: your NC dies, and can't be revived. No one can tell it was rooted. Less worse: it's acting up or has other problems. You reflash the original ROM, and no one can tell it had been rooted. Either way you can't lose!
