Just a word of warning. If it stuffs up like my 650, it will cost $32 to send back to the USA for repair - sony AU will not repair for free under warranty, and if outside of the 90 days, another US$30 for labour.

Yeah, I know. That was the risk I took with my PRS-300.

I have ordered a spanking new PRS-650 from Myer Perth CBD, so all is good thus far.

Many many years ago, there was a wonderfully daft film, "Flash Gordon" - she would be a dead cert for a walk-on, if not starring role, in that !

It seems to be a good idea to order directly from the german Sony shop, they tend to get smaller amounts of the 650 (in all colors) every few days or so, just check their homepage in the morning.

Just got PRS-650 from the library and to be honest I have no idea why I ever even looked at Bebook or Cybook. This reader is really nice in build quality and e-ink technology. Why would I ever pay 250 euros for a plastic toy when I can get a quality reader for the same price?

And WIFI... seriously what you need it for? E-ink is not for browsing the internet and it really is not that hard to plug the reader to the computer to upload books.

Agreed. I always wanted an E-Book-Reader and not a portable bookstore...

Never understood the "need" for WiFi either. I borrow almost all my books from the library so I need to go through the computer anyway. I've read around 50-60 books the the five months I've had my readers. Of those book one (1) was purchased. ($1.99 - didn't have access to US libraries at that time...). The rest were either free (maybe a handful, from different places) or legally borrowed library books (the vast majority).

Egg Zachary! My wife has a Kobo and very rarely uses the Wifi. In fact I load most of her books through the USB via Calibre. I look at Wifi the way I do megapixels in cameras (after about 6 MP, for screen viewing and small prints, 10, 12, 14 MP is redundant) - it's more of a selling than a useful feature; much more importance being placed on it by novices than by those familiar with the technology.

Hah! I was told a million times over by the Kindle fraction how "nice" it is to buy a book when waiting at the airport/train station/bus stop!

Tell you what, we are just to stupid to see the need we have to be able to buy a book on the run for a device that stores already a couple of hundred unread books. Must be either this or... there is no need for wifi

A long while ago, I really bought books regularly at train stations, whenever I had to take the train somewhere. But with my reader, I don't WANT anymore, as I can take thousands of books with me everywhere I go. So the ability to buy books everywhere isn't something I need anymore. I can buy 10 books in advance and take them with me whereever I go.

I seriously wonder who these people are that buy books at the bus stop. They have serious cash to burn. Do you just hear about a good book while waiting at the bus stop and think "I must buy this book now?" I can see why some people might want to wirelessly download books but downloading while on the train or driving your car seems, well, different. I brought all of two books since getting my Nook and I side loaded both of them (one was suppose to downloaded but for some reason didn't download right away and as I don't have wifi at home, I just downloaded it onto my computer first).

I like my Nook but I still want a Sony. I seriously do not need wifi.

As the owner of both a Kindle 3 and a Sony PRS-350, I can perhaps look at this impartially, and I have to say that, even though Sony is the clear winner when it comes to build quality of the device, they have a lot to learn from Amazon when it comes to ease of buying books. Amazon aren't just selling you a reader with the Kindle: they're selling you the whole book "infrastructure". With the 3G Kindle especially, it just couldn't be easier. Browse the bookstore on the device, click a button to download a free sample, and seconds later it's there in front of you. Read the sample, click the "Buy this book" button at the end, and a minute later you have the entire book. Compared with Sony's awful, awful eBook Library software, it's a breath of fresh air.

Yes, Sony make much nicer hardware, but book reading isn't just about the hardware, it's about the whole buying experience, and Amazon really have got that sewn up.

Why is it a commong thaught, that if one has a reader, one will purchase books? I have not paid for one book. Smashwords and individual writers offer really amazing books for free. There are tons of free and well written and exciting books out there but not as much time to read them all.

I have to give it for Amazon. Yes, they managed to create all-in-one package from purchasing, downloading to reader as well as reading itself and it is great for most people. I for one cannot stand these "Click once and have it all" things, I want to know what is installed and how, how is the epub file formatted and such. First thing I did when got PRS-650 from library was ignored the Sony software and looked around the folders to locate the place where I need to copy/paste the epub files into.

Might be a reason why I'm so fed up with updating my music catalog on my iPod Touch. Really hate forcing the iTunes.

Anyway, the most important thing is that we all are satisfied in our reading toys, isn't it?
