Yes, apple home sharing and some other systems are the same. If you lose access to the authorized computer due to crash or something you just can't de-auth it using another device.

Personally, I think a 5-6 device limit is crazy. Although, Adobe claims over time more device slots are added to your account due to anticipated attrition of old devices.

I'm still waiting for the day eBooks follow eMusic and go 100% DRM free.

Jim Lester sorted out my daughter's problem brilliantly. Not his fault at all that the Adobe software is ridiculously overburdened with DRM and that Sony can't write decent software at all (said with feeling - before I surrendered and got an IPOD I had a Sony Walkman which used Sonicstage!! The sound quality was much better than IPOD but the software was unbelievably bad)

Get your authorisations reset and follow the procedure that I used - see my post above- and hopefully that should sort it.

We've both now got Kindles as well because new fiction is much cheaper from Amazon than the epub retailers. I took charge of installing those!! We both have them registered to one account so we can read each other's books. For her, this has the advantage that she uses my Amazon account to buy the books as well!!

Well since I'm one of the team that wrote the DRM system, it is partially is my fault

It's only a pain because you think it is one. Outside of your own privacy concerns, and specific tech support needs, there is no reason to ever deactivate a machine. Deactivating does not get you an activation count back.

p.s This will be my last post as an Adobe Employee, after 16 years I've decided to move to a different company.

Bummer for us and Congrats to you. Where are you going, a Ruby on Rails Mac shop?

No it's a pain because of the way it is designed. If the computed crashes such that it can't be brought up. There is no way to deactivate without dealing with Adobe. This is a PITA to anyone having to do it. Additionally if someone has many machines or has done many activations then IT IS an issue and a PITA.

Nothing against you Jim, you've been a great help to many here and best wishes on your new position! Willing to say where? who? you'll be with?

All 'deactivation' does for RMSDK based applications (such as ADE) is to erase the local activation information (files or registry info) for the device in question. There is no Adobe server interaction at all. Adobe can NOT remotely deactivate your computer (or remove books, etc....).
So if you can't deactivate don't sweat it, because it really doesn't matter anyway.

No argument there, but much less so than a year ago.

I enjoy ebooks to much to leave and go work at RoR Mac shop (Sorry, pilotbob, I'm more of a vanilla PHP or Java guy anyway), so I'm heading to Barnes and Noble.

Note: I am officially no longer an Adobe Employee (badge turned in and everything).

heh hehe.. I figured, I was only kidding. I know how much Adobe and Apple are great friends.

I wish you luck.. I expect you are going to work on removing DRM from all ebooks B&N sells and put Adobe's ebook DRM division out of business. (kidding again, sort of).
