Reading is my first love... the ebook is a distant second. Figure it out.

I never bought a lot of hardcovers. Way too expensive. I only bought a hardcover when I wanted to show it. Another reason was because hardcovers are so hard to take with you at all times (I always had a paperback with me, even if I only had a coat with me...). Hardcovers require a bag, and then they'll break easily. Wasted money.

I did buy lots of pockets. But those I'll not buy any more. Once our lounge is done, where our library will be (between now and 6 years, it should be done...), I'll start buying books again, but only hardcovers and trade paperbacks. Not so much for reading, but more for showing

I don't buy fiction as paper books any more. I don't buy much reference material, but some of that will be in paper (E Ink screens don't allow quick random access to books).

I don't miss reading paper books. They're heavy, have to be held open, and don't remember your last page.

My new rule is, for every paper book that I buy, I'm going to get rid of one or more of my existing ones. My goal is to never buy another bookshelf, and to stop moving books off to plastic tubs in the basement. I have thousands of paper books already and the majority are just ordinary paperback that are available in ebook format, so I think I can find things to let go of, when/if I do buy some more paper books. I'll keep the special paper books, and slowly let the rest go.

Last summer I reoganized my books. Those I read over and over again I bought in the best quality available (smyth-sewn, ivory paper, the works) and everything else went on sale. In the end I made 150€ profit, which is a lot when you consider I bought about a hundred expensive ones in the process, and now I have all in all about 300 books left. These fit into the three shelfs in my bedroom.

Now, I just buy ebooks. There is no need to hoard paperbacks. Some of the re-read books I bought for the third time in my life. First time around cheap paperback had to be exchanged due to yellowing, loosing pages etc. Paperbacks and glued hardbacks just don't have a very long life. But I do. And so I want my books to have. The ones I own now will last until I die.

Still enjoying paper books more. I am currently reading Zoo City on my phone and it fells like something is lacking. The books I buy now is nearly only hardcover and trade paperbacks since the only books I buy is books that I want to read directly and when they are published. I have to many unread paperbacks to choose from to buy anything else.

No wonder. A phone is meant to enable you to talk to people not to read your books on it. Get yourself a decent e-ink reader and you will be hooked like the rest of us.

I read books on my Cybook Gen 3 before it broke and actually the experience reading on the phone is not so much different. It actually worked much better than I would have thought reading on the phone.

Yes, I continue to buy hardcover books. I just bought 2 yesterday and have ordered a half-dozen more. However, in comparison to my ebook purchases, hardcover purchases are quite small. For example, during eBook Week, I bought 105 ebooks and I have purchased another 12-15 since. In contrast, since the beginning of 2011, I have bought or ordered fewer than 20 hardcovers. (I do not buy paperbacks.)

For me the issue is one of permanence. And, yes, I know that I can lose a hardcover to fire, theft, flooding, tornado, earthquake, and any number of other causes that are within or beyond my control. The permanence I speak of is one of intent. If I buy a hardcover, I am buying it in that form because I want to add it to my permanent collection/library. eBooks, however, I expect to read once and throwaway; in other words, nearly all ebook purchases are of novels. Hardcover purchases are mixed -- fiction and nonfiction -- but 90% nonfiction. Additionally, it depends on the type of book. For example, I just ordered a $350 2-volume set on the art of William Bouguereau. It would make no sense (in my mind) to buy the books, even if available, in ebook form. For that price, I want to own the book, not rent it.

I believe there a place remains, and will remain for decades to come, for pbooks, even if the number of buyers continues to dwindle.

Permanence.

This is true. I found a floppy disc the other day. I guess my beloved Sony will be as useless as this floppy disc one day, while my books will be still there and their content easily accessible for me.

I don't like to read hardbacks at the moment, my reader is much more convinient but it is kind of an insurance to have the books in the house.
