We'll know for sure if they start giving Kindles away like some are predicting they will. But I think Amazon wants to sell books. That's why the make free Kindle apps. The Kindle system encourages you to buy mostly from them. I predict that at some point, they'll decide hardware growth sales have flattened, and most folks who want a reader already have one, and the Kindle system as garnered them as many loyal customers as they can hope for, then maybe the WILL sell ebooks that work on other readers too. ![]() You can track the books you've read by entering them on your "read" list. There is a 5-star rating system and room for comments. They do recognize multiple editions of books including eBook formats, but you can use the default if you don't want to go to the trouble of finding the right one. You can befriend people you know and trust who share your reading preferences and have access to their book lists and opinions and ratings. There are literally thousands of people on Goodreads, so popular titles are highly commented and evaluated. It is rare to not find a title already listed but you can add new ones for indie authors if you need to. One of my favorite features is that you can list books 'to-read'. I use this to enter titles that are recommended by friends before I forget them. Then when looking for the next book, I can scroll down through all my 'to-read' titles and pick one from the list. There are many good search sites for finding the best price on books or eBooks. There are other features such as groups and reading lists but I don't often use them. Good site, very well controlled and no spam. Befriend only people you know and want to follow. Sorry for the OT. ![]() |

Sorry, but it really IS easy. There are no scripts involved, no non-gui things to do, and it isn't even hard to find any more. Any user who can use Calibre can add the plug-ins required to remove DRM and read library books.

In the US circumventing DRM is a direct violation of the DMCA and if you are caught it is a very big deal. Why hassle with it when you can just buy a nook or any other Adobe DRM compatible reader for library books.

the question of legality depends of the country of the resident - unless assumed, that amazons Kindle is a US-only device; the statement that DRM-removal for private usage IS legal is false information IF countries are not specified.

I look at it this way: Amazon does not officially support reading library books on Kindle, so why should libraries support using Kindles to read library books?
There is also the DRM issue to contend with: Ignoring the legality of stripping DRM, one must also consider the fact that libraries are most likely contractually obligated to use DRM when lending books and that advising and assisting patrons to break said DRM may well be breach of that contract. I am also concerned (as a layperson) that since most of the arguments supporting the legality of DRM-stripping do rest on the foundation of being able to do what one wants with one's own property, they may not apply to library books anyway. Well, I don't think so. If I asked my daughter or ex-wife to do it, they'd go to the library instead. And they are very typical users.

However, if you get K4PC you can then download the books, and if so inclined strip the DRM and convert to ePub for your Kobo. It's the foot in the door.

And the copyright office lists various other situations where circumventing DRM would not be illegal. But this has all been done in other threads. A lot. ApK |
