Basically, yes. The old Overdrive mobi's had to be tweaked so that they would accept the Kindle's PID as a key, but the encryption was the same. And as things work now, Amazon's two-week limited, "lent" ebook DRM is the same as their "purchased" ebook DRM. The key to the lock just "breaks" after two weeks.

If you're talking about the encryption that the Mobipocket Creator software can apply to mobi's that you create... that is completely different than Amazon's DRM.

If it mattered, the other ereader devices on the market would be more popular.

This makes sense.

I see. Fascinating. So all the Nooks, Sony, Kobo, and many other ADE compatible devices and apps in use are irrelevant, and the fact that more and more libraries are adding ebook collections, and many of those that do have long waiting lists for the ebooks don't matter.
As Yogi said, "no one comes here anymore, it's too crowded."

So, precisely how much more popular need all the other ereaders be before they matter?

I have two ereaders; one plays Angry Birds and the other one doesn't. Guess which one matters?

No. They are not irrelevant, they form an important niche in the ebook market. There is a market for their wares.

Most e-book users don't do library books though.

ApK

My little rural library didn't have ebooks two years ago when I bought my Sony, so that wasn't a deciding factor in choosing that over a Kindle.

Now it does, and so now it would be. I LOVE library books, I always have a hold list.

Everyone chooses a reader based on what is important to them. Some, who can afford it, have more than one so that they can have access to everything.

What I object to is the people who declaim *loudly* that their choice is perfect and anyone who chooses differently is stupid. That only *their* chosen device 'matters' - despite all the evidence to the contrary.

Sure, there are more Kindles in the US (probably not the world yet) than Sonys. Or Nooks. Or Kobos.

But put all the epub-compliant readers together with the growing public library access and you have something potentially formidable.

There are no 'losers' - despite some people's tendencies to choose sides. Everyone who reads is a winner.

The answer to your question is: Its not. I am quite happy with my Kindle. If one day they get library access...guess what..I will be quite happy with my Kindle. If they choose never to get library access, I am quite happy with my Kindle. Should I decide, one day, that I must have library access on a machine, then I will buy an e-reader that supports it, and still be quite happy with my Kindle.

Its not much different then buying different console gaming devices (we have 3) in order to have access to different gaming titles.
Some people do have multiple portable devices just to have library access on the go.

We have multiple library systems here and I belong to three of them. There are two others I want to join when I can. The more libraries I can access, the more eBooks I can borrow.

The only issue I see going on is one of not knowing about the library and Overdrive before buying a Kindle. I've read of a lot of people buying a Kindle and then sometime later finding out about library eBooks and not being able to use them.

But for most people, I do think it is a good idea for libraries to let patrons know what popular portable devices do and do not work with library eBooks. For a long time, there was no library eBook support for iOS based devices.

The one that handles ePub via ADE and is eink and not LCD and does not play Angry Birds. That's the one that matters for reading because you have less of a chance of a distraction from reading. The problem with multi-function devices is that there is too great a distraction so you do end up reading less and it's this multi-function device that doesn't matter a whit.
