oh my, I thought this was just in certain areas, until tonight. I asked a thitd grader about her school, what she was learning. First, no cursive. Ok, it's sad but not earth shattering. Second, she's using a calculator in math! Third grade guys! A calculator!! Really? Ok, I do have a problem with that one. I'm sure it's mixed with jealousy, "hey! I couldn't use a calculator til high school!" But really, as far as problem solving goes, is that hindering? I'm not in the education feels so I'm trusting they've come up with something that will help them with their problem solving abilities other than just math... Maybe? I guess we'll see in about 20 years, eh?

Look on another bright side, we won't run out of electricity to power all these nice PCs etc that we increasingly rely on .....

using a calculator in grade school is just lazy. unless they're already learning calculus or something. how can this engage the children's minds?
i'm sure nobody's concerned about a nationwide blackout ![]() |

Ok, I'm not the only one that remembers having to "Show your work" and no calculators in class?
When my daughter started 6th grade one of the things on her school supply lists was a calculator, I have to admit being a little confused. I was told, when I demanded to know why a 6th grader needs a calculator, that the children need to be taught how to use the "Proper" tools. I really thought the "Proper tool" would be their mind? But I am sure I'm over reacting and they will always have a calculator handy for those difficult math problems: "If I leave city "A" on a train traveling at 100km/h how long will it take me to get to the drinking car?" ![]() I have worked with some younger people, I am only talking about the younger people I have worked with, so this is not a generalization, that needed a calculator to figure out percentage! They couldn't do it long hand? Hell these youngsters couldn't split the cheque without a cell phone calculator, I mean really the final bill was $80/4 people, they needed a calculator to figure this out, but they could always figure out how many more pigs they needed in Farmville! ![]() Why do I feel the urge to chase kids off my lawn all of a sudden? ![]() |

Correct answer but no working fails, whilst working but wrong answer at least gives some marks. Some kids at 15-16 do not know fractions ..... nor are they clear about what % means. At least one has used a calculator to work out what 1 * 10 is ..... |

My niece is going into parochial school for first grade next year because they still teach cursive handwriting. The public schools in her town no longer teach it, and her parents want her to learn it.
I think it is disgraceful that schools are dropping that from the core curriculum. If you no longer have the ability to read the past, how are you going to learn from it? |

I would like children to have a nice handwriting, so they can write their letters by hand. I still have some old letters from sweethearts. Such nice memories. It's not the same with emails; that's not romantic enough.
