Barnes and Noble's Nook is the ultimate closed system: it is only sold in the US, and B&N only sells its commercial ePubs in the US. Kindle devices and ebooks are sold around the world. Likewise, Kobo devices and ePubs are also sold around the world (including the ebooks B&N chooses not to sell outside its, er, "borders").
As for the Overdrive system which primarily focusses on DRM ePub and DRM PDFs, it was Overdrive that chose not to support Kindle format instead of Adobe DRM for ePub ... or at least, the interested parties at the time could not come to agreement. Happily, there is a cheap solution for everyone interested in a great ereader, (arguably) the best selection of commercial ebooks, library books from your local library system and have the option to live outside of the United States: use a Kindle 3 Wifi and buy a Kobo (or similar device) for library access and to save money on ebooks where the same title is cheaper in an ePub store than at Amazon. |

The truth is that some do have them but the trick is that you have to know how to get your Mobi ID for your kindle and register it with the library. Not necessarily easy for some people and (at least here) the limited selection of mobi format books probably is not worth it. Easy enough for me, but I'm a EE/CS for some 35 years now. |

Anyway, I'll try to make do without Amazon and there certainly are a number of places I can get books from easily (the library, Gutenberg, Kobobooks, Borders.com, and, I think, BAM. I must test BAM to see) but I could see myself eventually getting a Kindle as well as my Kobo... Last edited by covingtoncat73; 03-30-2011 at 07:26 PM. |

it would be nice if amazon would just make it easier for people to read library books on their device. it seems that it is the last hurdle to clear (in terms of 'reading out of the box', anyway)

NYPL has mobi books that work on a Kindle with no DRM stripping required, but I guess it's still not strictly 'native' and not supported by the library.
You need to put your Kindle's pid on your library account, and non-techies can get their Kindle pid at web sites like: http://kindletools.prestonlee.com/ Yes, ADE epubs are dominant, but to say "Kindle can't" is just wrong, which was the probably motivator behind the big colorful font. No reason for the big colorful font. Sometimes, big colorful fonts are just fun

Library eBooks used to be in Mobipocket format. But because of the proliferation of ePub and devices that handle ePub with Adobe's DRM, Overdrive & publishers switched. That and new readers do not handle Mobipocket. Nor do new tablets.

I was always advised that legal opinions were generally worth what you paid for them unless they were a quote from actual court decisions...

Getting my computer capable of downloading and reading ebooks from the library was harder than getting calibre to strip the DRM from those books so I could read them on my Kindle
