Since breaking DRM seems to be so open to interpretation, I'll just consider it dashing and daring...hell, it's the stuff that heroes and firebrands are made of. |

Now it comes out... it REALLY is a plot by Apple to take over the world if they released the Kindle... it's all over now, the Apple-haters were right (but their time is coming now that Apple rule the world) and we're all going to be using Apples - they've probably infiltrated Microsoft by now as well...

It is most certainly against the TOS to strip DRM from library books. And I also consider it unethical. Are you going to argue my personal ethics are wrong? You're very tenacious though, popping into every thread that mentions Kindle+library to declare that library books can be read on the Kindle. It's also possible to run burned games on my Xbox360... oh, did I mention I have to mod it first? I didn't? Well, newbie, you should get it anyway. Don't worry about the technical side of it, the legal issues, or ethical implications either. Just know that it can be done. That's all you need to know to make your decision. What a load of unhelpful BS. |

LOL there really is nothing open to interpretation DRM is DRM not DRM with a wink and nod. There are purchasing rights that go along with it.

Just a short reply to tubemonkey ...
... about "Doesn't anybody proofread any more?" and I don't want to make a big issue out of it.
'fraid not; it's a nearly extinct art, like the dodo. Have a look at Gutenberg's efforts with its "distributed proofreaders". I know these people are volunteers, but that's not the point. I've been a proofie since 1957, so I have a little bit of experience in finding literals. |

AFAIK neither Overdrive or Adobe Digital Editions works on a Kindle.
So which library services, pray tell, work natively on a Kindle? 'cause I'm not aware of any, nor do the libraries in the NYC area appear to use any such services. P.S. I really cannot believe that you have the legal right to strip DRM from a library book, if that's what you are implying. |

Duokan can read epubs, but I don't remember how difficult it was to install.

The other big point revolves around DRM. Amazon has become the largest ebook seller and the Kindle the largest selling dedicated ebook reader for a number of reasons, not the least of which is Amazon's DRM method. None of the other readers approach the simple "Kindle experience". Amazon's DRM does not rely on someone else's software running on the user's computer and compatible with a limited range of operating systems. Amazon's works without any connection to any computer. The primary DRM used by "the ePub crowd" is Adobe's highly proprietary system which mandates the use of personal computer based software. Yes, ePub format is open, but the common DRM is, on balance, just as closed as Amazon's. There may be more bookstores using Adobe's DRM for ePub but you have to use Adobe's software and a computer to actually get them onto your reader. |

If kindle users spent as much time lobbying amazon for library support as defending it maybe this thread would be moot. |

Is the reason that library books don't come in mobi because of libraries, Amazon, overdrive, or the publishers?
