And um. What the $%#*@! is that cover? S~G is a science fiction series involving humanity being split into two subspecies, one of which more-or-less enslaves the other & uses them for energy-food. I've got no idea what the half-naked girl-on-horseback cover is supposed to connect to. First Channel is the third book published in the series, but the first chronologically on the timeline; they don't need the first two for it to make sense. (However, they also don't need to make readers think they're missing the first two; gonna lose sales by starting with "Book 3.") |

Personally, I think that at this point anyone buying has probably already heard of the series and is desperate to get their own copies and will overlook the #3 designation. Wildside is pretty much mostly a specialty reprint/occasional new stuff by established authors who aren't getting their stuff published elsewhere publisher. Maybe once books #1 & 2 are out, it'll look like a clever marketing ploy, getting people to think they have to buy all three volumes to properly understand the chronological 1st book. |

I just can't figure out who's supposed to be interested in the book based on that cover. I'm not sure a scene remotely like that (even ignoring the wrongness of the clothes) even happens in the book--as in, I'm not sure there's ever a girl on horseback. |

Well I know this cover image drew my attention a long time ago in a library (I was barely a teenager) :
![]() and it turned out to be a pretty good SF novel... So it's not bad they chose this cover, except it's a bit frustrating in the same way as those scenes in Hollywood movies when some hot chick starts getting it on with some guy (or anoter hot chick) and the INCOMPETENT Hollywood cameramen somehow manage to miss EVERYTHING important with their cameras every time and I swear at them... ![]() |

Hitchhiker's Guide by far - the only "trilogy in five parts" that I have read, over and over and over...in fact, "Don't Panic" is my Kindle screensaver!

Well, I'm a purist. HHGG is the Radio Series, not the books - which are merely rehashes. All Adams's wisdom and mirth are contained in the radio series. If you can't hear Peter Jones's voice (or Simon Jones as Arthur Dent), then you don't know HHGG.
As for Tech_Au - I can't stand the first few Discworld books. I'm glad I didn't start there, as Rincewind is my least favorite character. Trust me, the books keep getting better and better. I can't vote in this poll, as choosing between Pratchett and Adams is just too difficult. I read the first few MYTH books, found them mildly amusing. That's all. Not satirical or witty enough to hold my interest over multiple books. If I were holed up somewhere with nothing else to read, I wouldn't complain, but they certainly wouldn't be my first choice by a long shot. Maybe, like Pratchett, Asprin improved as he went along, in which case I'm in the same boat as Tech_Au with Pratchett. |

Hitch hiker's is the one for me! I just tilted the poll result in its favour.
