I have posted "case-insensitive searching" issue to Duokan forum.

About the opensource issue,I understand why Duokan team not open their source as Kindle do.In my country,the law to protect intellectual property is very week. The government nearly ignore the intellectual property especially the software property of small company.In the commercial world(especially IT world),it often happen that a big enterprise(Tencent,for example) copy the idea even the code of some small companies and they never be punished!!!Because the small company or individual person doesn't has much money as the big enterprise to go to law.In my country,software is very undervalued.People would rather to spend 80 yuan to buy a T-shirt than purchase a 20 yuan software(avg. wages 1500 yuan per month,kindle 3 wifi only values 1280 yuan in my country,low wages?high price?).

So,I know Duokan team's concern and understand their attitude to opensource even though there are many people and company in my country begin to join or have joined the opensource world and I like opensource by myself.

I'm a bit unsure here: Are you saying that Duokan have not made changes to GPL'ed software or that it is ok to ignore intellectual properties of others (as delegated through GPL) in order to protect ones own?

Well, in fact they might not have done so. The whole duokan isn't a single piece of software but a distribution. Some of the software distributed is GPL'ed. But the core of Duokan itself might be an application that is not based on existing GPL code.

That said, I have my doubts about this as well since I'm not aware of a free-as-in-not-GPLed (sorry, little joke) PDF rendering library. There's the issue of linking to (otherwise unmodified) GPL code, which is imposing the GPL on the linking application.

But it's not as easy as spotting some GPL programs within the Duokan *distribution*.

I have not checked if anything has changes in this release, but they have made several European languages readable, but as they recode utf-8, mismatch with dictionary, stored notes, digest, and so on will occur.

Fethry, as western-World Duokan expert, do you think updating is really important?
I used to update constantly, but the updates keep coming more and more often. I have the 8734 version.
Are there any breakthrough updates?

bugs:

1. Images. All system images included in the home-dir-listing ( they should limit it to duokan folders, or within some file search..)

some remidy: the Kindle does not have a SD card reader as the Aigo + other settings seem to cause this. In DK_System/config.ini - you may try adding "#" to remark lines:

4. Menu error ? Uploaded 2 screenshots - does the Chinese say the same as the English ? I would believe it should export "digest", not dictionary. Confirmed:

No, you choose what ever you are happy with. Sorry, I have just replaced a hard-drive and I am unsure what 8734 was. There are more errors now after they got their own reader. Some mixup of code, I guess.

The lack of dictionary is a bummer on this latest.

8734 must have been 3-4 updates before. So I guess I didn't miss anything important. I'll stay with it for now.

Also, thanks for you dictionaries .zip some pages ago. I installed it, although the dictionaries are not that good, and it work just fine.

Sorry,I had neglected the possibility that Duokan is restricted to GPL.If Duokan os is restricted to GPL,they must change it to opensource.

By myself,I update Duokan once a month.Some of their updated versions have more bugs than the old one.Now,I'm using the version Beta0304.From the comments on their offical forums,the version Beta0318 might be the best one,but I haven't tested it.I never use the wifi in Duokan,it has many bugs.

I hear that Duokan team are developing a new layout system now.Hope that the new layout system can support css and has better performence.

thank you - did update the earlier post. It is one of those small details that might be difficult to spot and easy to forget. Interesting about the releases, but what may look good from a Chinese point of view, is not always so good from ours.

Most here seem to focus upon PDF, while my focus has been in the .txt formats. One of the reasons is that they have responded to the errors we have found.
( btw. I don't think dictionary works in PDF if you crop, enlarge, tilt or zoom the pages. It is also affected by the same language issues* - sadly enough )

Remark on the * : pdf exist in different formats. The most interesting is the one with a character text layer wich makes it possible to copy words, search or do lookups. The least interesting may be the plain photo image version.

No important changes or improvements, but we hope to see some. Some of the dictionaries are good, some are less good. You may get an account and build your own, or use tools they supply. All the dictionaries has been made by people willing to contribute. And you can also use the tools and programs in other ways you like. There is for example an encyclopaedia - and some interesting possibility would occur if the Kindle would be able to handle text and picture as in those examples.
