So true.

I am still waiting for the Paul Ham book "Vietnam" to come down below $30. It has been more than two years since first published and the price for the paperback is still over $40.

Don't hesitate, great read, a good fun read (not that I have finished it yet, damn University assignments). Actually this is the first book I have read by an fellow Aussie.

Funny, I have to make comment on this as it really made me realise it when I bought book 1. Why is it someone can go buy an ebook from a self published author and find the ebook formatted nicely (and as an added bonus in multiple formats all DRM-free) but if you buy an ebook from a publisher 9/10 they are DRM riddled and formatting up the shoot?? Every epub I have bought from an ebookstore I have had to strip the DRM and reformat it because they have been horrid. Hal Spacejock book 1...nah just copied straight to the ereader, formatting was perfect.

you must have missed the earlier, ummm, 'unpleasantness' when everyone was chasing our own tails trying to figure out which versions of the ebooks we actually received. But those were the fun days, did you get your first version then? If so then you have to remember the adventure of the formats and the poor person at the publisher who really was trying so hard to get things right. Me? I blamed Clunk, I mean he is just a machine, just a calculator with delusions of grandeur, right? Ya know, that makes Clunk sorta like an iPad, yes?

Just to clarify - Hal isn't self-pubbed in the traditional sense. My publisher is Fremantle Press (www.fremantlepress.com.au), it's just that I have the technical know-how to put an ebook together and program the delivery system.

Wow, figures, I find out about Hal right AFTER the free book offer. Rats.

Anyway, Spacejock, I've just started reading the sample, and I'm enjoying it.

I'm also looking forward to Hal Junior to give to my son.

One tech question (and I apologize if it was addressed somewhere in this 18 page thread and I missed it). The sample on the Kindle has an unusually wide left margin, like all the text indented an extra 1/4" or so. Is the full book formatted the same way, or is that a glitch? Anyone else check the sample on Kindle and know what I'm talking about?

Thanks again, Simon,

ApK

Just saw your question. I can send you another copy if it's still wrong. I use Calibre to generate the ebooks and they look fine on my Kindle, but perhaps you got an intermediate one where I was still experimenting?

I'll double check later, but I'm pretty sure you'd have heard about it from me long ago if the full book had the same issue!

I can't believe after all the recommendations I've made of the Hal Spacejock series since discovering it that I missed this thread or the fact that you're a MobileRead member. Keep up the great work! I'm looking forward to Book 5!

Much appreciated! As a writer it's always good to hear from someone who actually likes your stuff. Most of our emails are from our editor, telling us where we've got things wrong, or the publicist telling us where our books aren't selling.

PS I'm a happy Kindle owner myself and have started converting friends & family.

First book was great. Not sure if you're aware, but it was a MobileRead book club read a couple of months back. You became not only read, but discussed as well.

I haven't got to the rest of the series although they're all sitting in my Calibre waiting for me to find room for them.

Regards
Caleb

Thanks! First books are often a bit wobbly, and the series definitely improves as it goes along. My personal fave is #4, by a mile.

I love that one also, largely because of
Spoiler:
the addition of Harriet Walsh—the perfect love interest for Hal. I look forward to seeing her as a regular character.

We'll see. I treat the books like a TV series with regular characters and guest spots. There's also character progression and a kind of overall arc, but it's important to me that each book can be enjoyed as a standalone.

I've had to create a huge series bible to keep track of all the planets, Hal's favourite snacks, and the people he's fallen foul of. I've stuck everything in Freemind, which is a fantastic (free) mindmapping program.

BTW if anyone reports a typo in book 1 I'll send them book 2 as a thank you.
