fyi:
Some of us got Hal Spacejock nominated for this month's MR Book of the Month Club selection. Here is the 3rd, mine of course... But anyone looking for a reason to read the book might want to vote in the "voting thread" now that the nominations are closed. Not sure if or when the voting thread will be opened. should be soon though just peek there now and again. Nomination thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...=126347&page=5 Oh, this month's theme was "Humor" and this was such a fun read. If there are enough votes it then it would be the official read for the club. After that there is always a discussion thread for the book. Post with final list of books which will be in the voting thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...45#post1454645 Anyway, just thought I would pass along the nomination. Thanks for the nomination - I really appreciate it.
Also glad you're enjoying the book, sabredog. Book one was my first effort, and the second and subsequent books (apparently) get better and better. (Just as well - as an author I'd hardly want to get worse with each book!) |

I voted for it. I grabbed a free copy some time ago and always wanted to read it. So this month I will. Reading some peoples' opinions of it and it seems to rate fairly highly.
Edit: Ok, for whatever reason I couldn't find the copy I downloaded when it was free. So I bought the ebook just now and about to start it. Last edited by Solicitous; 03-25-2011 at 05:53 AM. Reason: Edit |

Finished book 1 and throughly enjoyed it.
I must say there were shades of Harry Harrison's great Stainless Steel Rat books with some of the antics that Hal and Clunk got up to. Will I read the other books in the series? Absolutely! |

This is the part where I confess I've not read Stainless Steel Rat ...
In fact, I'd never even read Pratchett until Hal 2 was published. I'm a stickler for reading a series in order, and back in 2002 it wasn't as easy (or as cheap) to order books online - and I couldn't find Colour of Magic anywhere. Subconsciously, I probably realised it wouldn't be a good idea to read in the genre, not while I was trying to establish my characters and their surroundings. Once I'd written two books I relaxed my rules a bit and got into Red Dwarf (had never seen an ep before that - I'm only halfway through season 2 now...) That's why I don't mind people comparing my stuff with others - I know I didn't cherry-pick characters or ideas from the big names in the genre, and any similarities are coincidental. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the book. The first in a series is where the author is still getting to meet the characters, and there are always things which look a bit creaky when you go back and read it with a more experienced eye. (I spotted half a dozen little things when I was re-formatting it for the ebook, but I decided not to mess with it.) |

After an evening out ruined by a family argument, my miserable mood was completely changed by reading about Clunk dumping the contents of the Gull's waste tank
![]() My wife was wondering what I was laughing at until I passed my Kobo over to her to read the page. She joined in the laughter as well.

I just found your new pricing on the books!!!!
I must say I bought book 2 over a year ago and traveled and got back from DC and went to go buy the other 2 (first one i got for free) and they got moved to another online publisher. I am estatic to get them as a set and will be ordering my 4 pack tonight...might as well order all for or only 5 more...finally ill be able to finish reading the series... Thanks for making them available again for a great price... Jonathon

That's okay, it only took me about two years to talk my publisher into it. I'm very stubborn.
I was devastated when they stopped selling the $5 version and moved to a $16 each via a middle-man. The first I knew was when the upset emails started coming through. What I did was to tell people unofficially to buy one of the $16 ones, and then I'd email them the others for free. I couldn't exactly put that on my website though, and it killed off any momentum the books might have enjoyed. I had to go through my website and blogs hunting down all mentions of 'DRM-free', 'Cheap' and 'Under $5' so I could edit them out. (I don't blame my publisher - they have 400+ titles on their list and ebooks are taking a lot of companies by surprise.) In Australia, regular paperbacks sell for $20-$22. Publishers figured they could sell ebooks for the paperback price minus 20%, but in my opinion they're digging a hole for themselves. Especially when bookstores are going broke & closing shops. |
