All switched to Facebook? I don't think so! I've never looked at Facebook, let alone used it .

Well, my first computer was a Digi-Comp (mechanical) computer, back in '64 I believe. It was a toy, but it was a working, programmable, binary computer.

My first computer that would be recognizable as a computer was the Commodore VIC-20 (it was a toss-up between that and the Sinclair ZX-80). I used it to get on CompuServe and GEnie. At work (Bell Labs) I was on the internet, mostly to other company sites, but also poking around for research, etc. Back then "cruising the internet" was a lot easier if you had a good working knowledge of UNIX.

I had a Timex Sinclair 1000, I actually sold it to a guy in the UK for a lot more than I paid for it. I picked it up in 1996 at a yard sale, along with the tape drive (cassette recorder) and a printer, the computer worked out of the box, the printer took some time to work out. I paid $50 cdn and sold it in 2001 for 100 quid. I thought it was a hell of a deal, I even covered shipping.

They were less than useless, difficult to program, I spent the better part of 2 days trying to write a silly pong game, the damn ball would either stick to the paddle or go through it, never did sort it out. I'm glad my parent sprang for the TRS-80, more like a real computer.

I had a Timex Sinclair 1000 once, plus IIRC two memory expansion modules that piggybacked on each other. Bought probably the very late 80 at a flea market. I paid $1.00 for it. Didn't really get my money's worth.

I still have one of these that I paid $50 for some time in the 1990s.

The first computer I owned was a Sinclair ZX-81 (the original of the TS-1000). I built it from a kit. I still have it packed away somewhere, although the keyboard died. Loved that lil' thing ... still do, really, in some corner of my mind. I wrote a Galaxians game for it in 2k of memory (shared with video, I might add) ... didn't even have space for a hex loader, had to poke the whole thing in. Yeah, in Z80 machine code. It didn't play a great game of Galaxians, either -- there was no room for elaborations like keeping score -- but it did play. I suppose it says something about me that my next program was a D&D dice roller ... and a dozen or so years later, I was selling a descendant of that program at GenCon.

My first Usenet post was to net.flames, long before the Great Renaming. I think that says something else about me.

(actually, I'm not 100% certain of the name anymore, except it was .flames, and it was in 1981, and it was from a real, honest-to-God PDP-10)

Damn I really wanted the TRS-80 100, but my parents didn't think this computer fad would go anywhere. We had a TRS-80 III I remember trying to learn TRSDOS, it wasn't all that easy, we did have a copy of ZORK, played that till the floppies died.

My parents finally bought a 486 class machine in 97 and are still using it and a PowerBook G4, they prefer the Mac, so I doubt the old 486 gets used at all. The funny thing is that my brother that still lives in the same city is an IT professional, but he doesn't like to help them with the computer, so I will get calls at 4am, mom always says, "Did I wake you?". Oh well.

I bought my first computer in 1991.. It had a HUGE 40 megabyte hard drive and 1 meg of ram.. It also came with a docmatric printer (I think that's the word). Cost me all up just over $2,000. Oh.. and it was fast! Sending and receiving faxes, just blew me away...

Thinking back on that, I'm amazed at the size of personal computers these days, and that we need all that 'room'...

Not my first computer, but I guess it's still a computer, thank god they came up with GPS. I know I used it at one time, but I sure couldn't do it now!

Sorry about the size, I'll find a smaller pic, thats better!

Last edited by Mortis; 03-26-2011 at 08:49 AM. Reason: inserted smaller picture

*eyes tearing and bleeding* a SMALLER pic wasn't a good idea - I can't even guess what they are now.
