I was about to post the same thing about the US news websites.

The news people like wars for some reason, I suspect for the same reason (whatever it is) that they like ballgames.

I think that Japan is the far greater story, not only for the suffering involved, but because it's possible that this will put an end to nuclear power (which would have far reaching effects regarding the generation of power throughout the world throughout the century), and in the shorter term because it could devastate Japan's manufacturing (not only the short term disruption, but perhaps because of a worldwide fear that products made in Japan will be radioactive).

That can't be good. I really can't believe there would be much danger. What's wrong with screening instead of halting...sheesh!

We have become so worried about everything, we worry about a little radiation in our milk 60 years ago they made Radioactive toothpaste

The environmental damage is low in Nuclear power generation, when compared to Coal fired electrical generation. The fact that the Japanese reactors are leaking isn't going to be enough to close all reactors in the world, let alone Japan, I doubt you could produce the needed electricity in Japan by any other means, at least not as cost effective or environmentally safe.

geothermal energy? - I would have thought that would have been a better option...they have it, why not utilise it.

From what I know about Geothermal energy, very little, is that they would have more problems with the shifting ground, the very cause of the current problems.

"After 35 years, 16 geothermal power plants in the 14 geothermal power station sites (excluding small power generation facilities for household use) are currently operating in Japan."

According to a quick Googleing, it looks as though Japan is already using Geothermal power generation (since 1966), but I think if it were viable they would be using it more. From what a quick scan gave me, I think money and sutable sites may also have something to do with it.

You can have a look HERE for more info.
