Amazon wouldn't really need to exist, all books would become viral as is their wont. The author uploads, the readers download and share.

without copyright protections authors would be treated no better than street performers. So if copyrights ever end it might be best if authors buy their refrigerator box now and start to stock pile Sterno and cans of Spam.

I'm no author so it must be nice to even have the option of investing in a place to live and that yummy maybe-meat called Spam, aka the Unoffical Meat-Food Product of Hawaii.

We have toxified our living spaces, all in the name of profit. ereaders aren't sustainable but hopefully one day they will be.

Do you see more restrictive and powerful copyrights paving the way to the new era? I see global adoption of ereaders and access to infinite reading material as the only thing capable of getting us through this mess we're in.

No, I certainly would not agree . Don't you think, though, that as a true believer in the "new society", you should be taking the lead and giving away your work for free, rather than sordidly expecting to get paid for it?

I love the New Society ideas, and it should be given a fair chance. Viable isolated space is running short on Earth, but one day we'll have new worlds to settle. Then the New Society folks can be sent to create and run their own world as they see fit. Then a few years after that, when their society crumbles, the rest of us will have a new planet complete with facilities and supplies waiting for us.

I think there's a place in the world of art for offering a product (song, book, whatever) for free electronically and accepting donations. Doctorow's made it work for him. My husband's had some success doing that with music. But I think this generally works best in small, niche markets.
