Thanks for the thought, but, yes I did - I re-entered all settings after doing a factory reset.

Ah! I think I have overcome the problem: Downloaded the most recent Kobo Desktop application and installed it over the existing one - once completed, the desktop happily synced with the Kobo.

Got the WiFi update, after a couple weeks of occasionally clicking on Sync in the desktop Kobo app. The firmware is 1.9 (r25373) of Mar. 29. User guide still dated Oct. 2010.

First off, the update has some handy library management functions. When you are in the Books list, the menu item is called Delete This Book. When in the I'm Reading list, the function is Remove From List. When reading a book, the function is Close Book, which exits the book and removes it from the I'm Reading list. All those seem to work.

The other addition is Go To, which brings up a virtual numberpad with two options on top: Skip Pages and Skip Chapters. Both work but are flaky. With Skip Pages, you enter the number of pages to skip from p. 1. Well, OK, but I would rather be able to skip back and forth from the page I'm on, as for example when I want to check back maybe five pages to see who a character is. In any case, maybe the function should be called Go To Page X rather than Skip Pages.

With Skip Chapters, even though it says, eg, "Enter a chapter number from 1-23," in my current 23-chapter book, the function counts all pieces of the book as chapters, from the first entry in the TOC. Thus, from the Cover, skipping 2 chapters in this book takes me to the 2nd item in the TOC ("Other Books By This Author"), not to Ch. 2 or 3. If on the 1st page of Ch. 1, skipping 2 chapters doesn't take me to Ch. 2 or 3 but again to the 2nd item in the TOC. To get to Ch. 3 from the Cover, I had to skip 10 "chapters"--actually, that many TOC items.

Otherwise, the update downloaded and installed quickly without any crashes or loss of books. But I hope a fullfledged 2.0 is more thoughtful in its Go To operations.

We all hope the 2.0 version has a bunch of upgrades... seriously if it's a good update, Kobo will be hanging with the "big boys" (Kindle, Nook). And who heard of getting a Kindle or Nook for $59?

A little weirdness last night with my Kobo: when I fired it up and tried to read the current book I have been reading (purchased from Kobo and installed via the PC app, then loaded on the Kobo by syncing last week) - I got a message saying the file was locked, and that I would have to update my library before I would be able to open it.....
So, I was able to do this as I was at home and not far from my wireless internet.
Queries - Anyone else have this happen?
- What would I do if I was away on holidays and far from an internet connection? I don't think I would be very happy if I was locked out of an interesting book only partly read! It wasn't something that happened straight away, but after I had opened and closed the book and the Kobo every night for about five days after initial loading.

@almagary--I use the old TOC function to get to the Chapter I want, and then Go To for pages, which (in smaller letters) says go to the page you want in the current chapter, and that seems to do it. Go To Chapter is just too wonky to be useful, IMO.

when we try to change size of font, sometimes my kobo seems to reboot, and come back to my current book with the font resized ...

I've had that happen a few times. Or the Kobo locks up and I have to shut it down by pressing quite a long time on the off/on button. When it boots up again, it's with the changed font size.

Encountered a neat problem today. Was reading and finished a side loaded book. When I went back to the list of books it showed me the message "No Books on unit".

I powered down and up, and now books ARE being shown. However, if in the Book Menu I select the Display setting to I can only select "All Books" or "Pre Loaded Books"; the ability to show my books only does not exist!

Time to try a sync with both Calibre and Kobo Desktop and then, if needs be, a reset / reload.

*EDIT*
AH...
Running Kobo Desktop and doing a sync (with DbgView) up and running shows a series of:

Code:
[5424] EXECUTED QUERY ----------  "INSERT OR REPLACE INTO content_keys (volumeId , elementId , elementKey) VALUES (? , ? , ?)"
[5424] BOUND VALUES ----------  QMap((":SET0_volumeId", QVariant(QString, "a1a04a54-b96d-43cc-9ff2-abcfbe26492d") ) ( ":SET1_elementId" ,  QVariant(QString, "OEBPS/part5.html") ) ( ":SET2_elementKey" ,  QVariant(QString, "6vG9UK8jcsMRAwoCc6BHlA==") ) )
[5424] ERROR ---------- QSqlError(11, "Unable to fetch row", "database disk image is malformed")
and
Code:
[5424] SyncBookCommand::requestKepubDone
[5424] SyncClient::syncNextBook 12
[5424] SyncBookCommand::execute
[5424] Saving image  "J:/.kobo/images/7ZRQPdzhvEG1DhQgyV3-yg - bbMediumGridList.parsed" of size 2642
[5424] Image save canceled - file already exists
Sigh... corrupted database

1.9 Issues

Anybody still having problems with slow page turns, difficulty powering down, slow start-up after the 1.9 firmware upgrade? If you did have these issues how did you rectify them or are you still living with them?

I asked the Kobo Help Desk about reverting to the earlier software but it seems that I am pooched. I don't want to have to return it for a replacement if there is some other recourse.
