PDF header still showing up after cropping

Hello everyone,

Well the title pretty much says it all.

I've cropped my PDF with Briss, which has supposedly gotten rid of the pesky headers, but when I convert my file, they're still here.

Also, what's the RT9239_INT.qxd 6/25/04 12:52 PM Page 4 thing I'm getting at each original page break? Is Calibre generating this?

Briss obviously just hid the info from view and didn't delete it.

No, calibre is not generating this. What you are seeing is part of your PDF file.

Read this sticky post for more info on using PDF files for conversions.

The RT9239_INT.qxd... stuff will be hidden text inside the PDF. It can be removed with software like Adobe Acrobat.

As dwanthny says, Briss merely "hides" your unwanted data. It does not produce PDFs which are suitable for converting with Calibre. What you can do is use Briss to chop each page in half (top & bottom, or left & right). The resulting cropped & chopped PDF can then be read more easily on your reader. Although how good your ereader is at handling PDFs will determine how acceptable the results are. I've found my PRS650 to be quite good but my PocketBook 360 is another story.

There's also a sticky on how to use the search & replace feature to remove things like page header/footers.

Aw I thought that it actually deleted the info.
Well that was kind of a "sticking your head in the sand" solution then.

So I suppose that all of the existing "cropping solutions" do the same thing: make it look different but doesn't change any of the actual data, right?

Is there any kind of program involving a "visual" cropping that would also strip the cropped data?

As for search/replace & regex fun, that's what I ended up doing, although I was quite reluctant at first because the header also featured the chapter title.

As I said ealier, Adobe Acrobat will, but I don't know of anything free which will do it.

I use Adobe Acrobat to crop the page then export it to html. I then add the html to calibre, but if you don't have access to Adobe Acrobat this isn't a cheap solution.

And I suppose that no one else can do it because pdf is a "closed" format, kinda like how Sigil can't make mobi's directly or something?

I have had pretty good luck with PDFReflow - it will remove header and footer and convert to HTML.
