ARRRGH! At the Home and Garden show, I told the spokesmodels what my budget was, and why that was all that i want to spend. (Because we plan to sell the house in 2012, so did not want a giant investment.) The salesman just left, and we wasted his time and ours because the quote is exactly double what our budget is. Double what we told the show girls and double what we told him when he walked in the door. ARRRRGH!
YAY! I'm getting a new bathroom! Another company came today, can do everything I need, and $200 under what I had budgeted. That $200 will go for pretty new linens and things for my bathroom.

Now, the last thing left to do on my list id to replace the kitchen and laundry room floors. Next year!

That reminds me of the "Pawn Stars" show on the History Channel. They always settle for just about exactly half of what something is worth. My wife says they remind her of organized crime bosses.

I also bought all new towels when we had our bathroom redone; very nice. I also bought a small radio to sing along with under the shower.

This may be of interest then.

H2O Power radio runs on water from the shower

Don't know if it'll help with the singing though.

Oh I come from a land, from a faraway place, where the caravan camels roam
Where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face
It's barbaric, but hey, it's home
When the wind from the east, and the sun from the west, and the sand in the glass is right
Come on down, stop on by, hop a carpet and fly
To another Arabian night...

Pawn shop owners always remind me of leeches.
People come to them only when they really, really need money, bringing their precious treasures to sell only because they must, and the pawn shop owners give them sooooo little for them. Of course I realize that it's necessary in order to run their business, but I can't help feeling sorry for the sellers, and feeling that the shop owners are sucking their blood.

I'm starting to think about getting rid of much of my stuff.

The replacement value would total a significant amount of money, but most of what I have is of no value to most people. A thief would walk away disappointed.

I'll just have to bite the bullet and toss most of it. Most of the old books can go to a veterans center. But there are many books, such as programming and networking, that are so much land fill now.

I could go on, and on, but it still amounts to the unsellable detritus of my life.

Any one know of the best way to sell, in toto, a stamp collection?

Or a set of Noritake china from the early '60s?

I know that there are companies that'll buy them on speculation, but I'd have more satisfaction selling to someone who really wanted them.

I have my grandmother's Noritake china. With the outrageous price of gold, i think it would be worth more to me to scrape it off and melt it down! It has no sentimental value, because she never used it even once. It was all just stored in a shed in rotten cardboard boxes.

I thought of that too. It's supposed to be about 22 - 24k.

We used to use it for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

If you're interested in selling them, this site may be of interest, but I just don't know. And I haven’t made up my mind yet.

My china set is from the early 60's. I inherited the first set, but really liked it, so when it came to getting more pieces I turned to the internet. I found some on ebay, but most on Kijiji. I was able to almost double what I already had.

Isn't that amazing? I never understood the point of owning possessions that never get used. I think most people feel that way today.

Stitchawl, I'm assuming that the Japanese futon is thin so that it can be cleared away when not in use?

The ones here, I'm sure you've seen them, are made up of a great many layers of quilted cotton. Somehow, though, it doesn't feel like sleeping on 6 to 8 inches of layered sheets. They're very comfortable winter or summer.

The two most uncomfortable places I ever slept were in an elevator mechanical room on top of an apartment building, and totally unprepared night in the woods in winter. Both long boring stories.

Strangely enough I've never had a problem sleeping on the ground while backpacking. And I just remembered sleeping under a highway overpass when it was inconvenient to set up camp during a heavy rain.

Nice, high, and dry. But very noisy.

Going Mobile I see.
