Increasing iodine intake is to prevent the take-up of radioactive iodine, which would get concentrated in your thyroid.

But if you did need to (if the exposure was partly due to radioactive iodine and not just other radioactive elements), you'd need a lot more than is in iodised salt.

Now here's a thought... What if McD's was using radioactive iodized salt... Hmmmmm.....

I guess it's a good thing Godzilla is coming. It will take my mind of long shot dangers.

I heard on NPR that iodine is one of those things, along with bread, bottled water and a few others, that are in really short supply as peopel are buying them off of the shelves.

Would you believe there's only ONE brand of salt at my local supermarkets that's actually iodised now? All the rest is without. All these idiots wanting 'natural' stuff, and not wanting any nasty added chemicals in their sodium chloride......

Science is no fun, I prefer the alternate reality of MR, this is not to say that there are never outbreaks of scientific reality. Can't be helped really.

We have the same problem here, I had to look in a couple of supermarkets to find iodized salt, and no one here seems to understand that its beneficial.
