So as I was 1/4 into Hitchhiker's Guide to Galaxy ebook, I decided t watch the movie first and I am glad I did. It now gives a wholly new perspective into what I am reading and in a good way.

Oh, so you're the one. The legendary reader who got some clarification of the book from the movie. I thought you were a myth, like the Loch Ness Monster.

I think it's necessary to be objectively critical of the ebook industry, ebooks and the ereaders - how else are problems to be identified and (hopefully) solved; how else will improvements be identified?

BUT, I LOVE MY LISEUSES AND THE EBOOKS I READ!!! https://www2.mobileread.com/i/smiliesadd1/iloveyou.gif

Seriously, I am able to read more than ever before, I've solved my acute space problem, I'm having great fun learning how to convert old, tatty pbooks into well-constructed ebooks (blessings & gratitude to Sigil & Calibre), and my ménage à trois (the PRS505, slinky in silver, the PRS650, lady in red, and me) seem to be getting on OK https://www2.mobileread.com/i/smilies/wink.gif and, ebooks led me to MR. https://www2.mobileread.com/i/smilies/biggrin.gif

grrr...smilies seem to be on strike!

I also enjoy reading in the dark or dim light. I read with my iPad or iPhone, and my wife is very appreciative of my not needing a "night light" when I'm reading in bed. I have gotten her hooked on reading on her iPod touch.

Bemoaning believers ??

I haven't done any deep research, but it seems to me that most Forumites say how much they have enjoyed ebooks, not moaned about them.

Now moaning about Readers, that's a different ballgame, but even so I think most are happy with them.

But if there is a problem with them, it's good there's somewhere to enquire/find solutions/what one suits best, etc..

And where better than here, in a community of hugely varying interests, skills, talents and knowledge.

I take public transit and live in an area notorious for its frequent inclement weather.

Having an e-reader and a ziplock baggie means that I can read in the rain while waiting for the bus* and carry an entire bookshelf's worth of reading with me to switch between when I get bored or finish something early without having to lug around a few extra paperbacks so that I don't end up staring out the window during lengthy transit commutes.

That said, the vast majority of my paid purchases and library loans are still paper, because both paper and e-editions have their own niches for how they represent books best†.

* Okay, technically I could have done this with a paper book if I had absolutely no regard for its ensuing condition.

† And I'm kind of cheap in certain ways and will only really bother to shell out for expensive deluxe collector's editions & academic/artsy reference and my very favouritest authors when I actually go and spend my own money on books.

Otherwise the library is good enough and I don't need to own all that other stuff like fiction bestsellers and pop-culture non-fic in either format.

I love having a massive library with me at all times. Stuck in the car with sleeping kids while hubby runs into the grocery store for 30 minutes? Whip out an ebook! Tired of reading the book you've started? Switch to another!

I just read through 9 of the Honor Harrington books in a row, all for free (anyone else notice how they get longer with each one? The first was 250ish pages, towards the end of the series they're 800+!). I also have several other MAMMOTH (1000+ page) books on there that are a pain to carry around, much less read in trade paperback form.

I don't have any late fees at the library. Sure they dont' have everything I want. And sometimes I have to wait. But I've been able to try new genres, new books, etc. without paying for them. And because I have a habit of forgetting to return paper books, I don't have any fines since they're automatically returned.

I can browse at midnight and get a new book.

I just love them!

THIS.

And I really love the ability to download a sample virtually instantaneously.

And that, in most cases, it's a truly representative sample that enables me to judge with confidence whether or not I'll want to buy the book. (Yes, you can get the same thing by riffling through a book in a bookshop... but you can't take and do that at home/at your leisure prior to buying it, can you?

I love the ability to strip DRM from an ebook so I can read it in the format and on the device of my choice.

I don't think I do a lot of complaining about my ereader or the ebooks I read. I don't even mind weirdo formatting, providing it doesn't totally detract from the book. I do despise bad editing, however :P

But my ereader is probably my most valued possession, even with its recent flaw in the form of a messed up corner of the screen. I rarely go anywhere without it. I even take it with me when I move rooms, even if I'm not planning to read it, or know I just won't have time.

Ever since I was a kid I've loved to read in bed, but you get locked into certain positions where you can hold the book open and easily flip pages.

Now I can lie in bed in perfect comfort for hours and move only my thumb and just let my body atrophy!
