It doesn't really matter where you live, there's always some for of natural disaster, in 2009 Denver was hit with a tornado, there's ice rain and avalanches.

Just saying, no matter where we live we are to some extent at the mercy of Mother Nature, and she doesn't pull punches

I'm really rather fond of where I live, North Central Ohio. We are just North of the line where tornadoes are frequent, my house is about 20 miles West of the snow belt (lake effect snow from Lake Erie), we have no hurricanes, no tsunami's, maybe one earthquake a year that we find out about by watching the news, we do not get extreme heat or cold, but we do get to experience all four seasons to their fullest, and the only two native poisonous animals are black widows and brown recluses.

I'm really pretty happy here ...

Greetings from the Land of the Moving Ground...

As you've seen from the news, things are pretty grim in the Tokyo area and north. I returned home just in time to feel the ground roll under my feet yesterday, and was glad to know that I am 300 miles from the epicenter this time. Last big quake was just 60 miles away. I didn't like that one. Yesterday's quake did a lot of damage, but it was the tsunami that really caused the major disasters. I don't like earthquakes.

Thanks, guys. I live in the Kyoto area, which is far enough south of the epicenter of this last quake (actually, I just heard that there was another, only 100 miles away at 4am but I guess I slept through it.) that we only had some ground shaking. In fact, I actually had to look at a hanging pendulum just to be sure that it really WAS a quake. There is NO disruption of anything in this area.

Looking at the news, it's pretty grim up north. Tokyo airports have canceled all flights, train service is disrupted there, and communications from cities just to the north of there are down. Fortunately, the area around the epicenter wasn't a major city or the casualty rate would be much higher, as it was for the Kobe quake of '95. I was here for that one too, and only 60 miles from the center. The majority of casualties was from the tsunami that followed.

Nothing... nothing... makes you feel as helpless as being in the middle of an earthquake. Not tornadoes, not hurricanes, not floods or blizzards. I've been in all of them and nothing makes you feel as helpless as being in the middle of an earthquake. There is just nothing you can do.

yeah glad too you all are still right
Since I'm already some time here on MR seeing news about all these diseasters (the floods down under, christchurch, now the tsunami and the quake) changed for me a lot.

Now, remembering how many fellows from here live in all the regions suffering from Gaias rage...
To feel so helpless; to have to think "there might be beople there just now, you somehow know and certainly like and if they're in some seerious trouble you cannot do anything about it."

It sucks.
So please keep your butts out of trouble, you bunch of fellow bibliophilic freaks.
