Ebook publishers with POD offerings have been around for at least 8 or 9 years. Well before the Kindle, there were such "viable e-readers" as the Franklin eBookman, the Rocket E-book, and many others. And there were companies like Ellora's Cave that really blazed the trail for e-book publishing with POD. EC even pre-dates Fictionwise, and FW has been in the business for a long time.

The erotic romance e-publishers with POD are doing very, very well. Ellora's Cave, Loose Id, and Samhain in particular.

Carina is selling e-books in a genre that's widely available in print, and that's not a model that's working. Also I'm not 100% sure, but I believe Carina books are DRM'd and that does make a difference to some audiences.

Yeah, nowhere in my comment did I mention anything about ebooks vs. print books, but thanks for twisting what I said.

FYI, I was talking about buying vs. library loaning of ebooks.

My mistake. I typed "stormcloude" when I should have typed "Joykins."

I don't either. I'm just getting whiplash from all the HC *activity*.

I didn't call it an insult to readers either...they are publishing a Loretta Chase story. Even if I were boycotting, I'd break it for a Loretta Chase story.

Carina is DRM-free. I read on DA or SBTB that they've adjusted their pricing down lately. I have some of their books but haven't read them yet.

It's my impression their erotic romances are doing well, but I have no numbers on that--they just seem to be the "most popular" listed. It's a shame if they're not selling well in general because IMO they have some interesting offerings. I've been enjoying their Jennifer Greene contemporary re-releases.

The word I've heard is that sales across the board are lower at Carina than at other romance e-pubs. IMO the issue is that Carina got into the game late. EC's been around since 2001, Liquid Silver since about 2002, Loose Id since 2004. Carina's competing for all the same readers as the more established pubs.

Of course it's early days for them yet, but considering Harlequin's track record of being fickle with epub offerings (I'm thinking of the launched-in-2008-and-then-ignored Spice e-pub imprint), it doesn't bode well for long term.

Avon's not paying well are they. 25% of net (not cover) with no advance isn't very good at all.
