I found this video about reading PDF's on the eee Note:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVj41...eature=related

I was hoping this device could make it, but it looks it's just the same again: some PDF's display fine, some others don't. The quest for a decent PDF reader starts yet again...

Can anybody confirm this?

Actually looks to be one of the best pdf readers around... the Pan & Zoom shown, is way easier to use and works smoothly as well. As for the "some pdfs work and some don't" repeated comments... what does everybody expect from a format designed to produce printed output at a specific size... try watching 4:3 TV expanded to fill a 16:9 TV screen... it stinks and 16:9 on 4:3 screen is hardly better unless you like black borders...

I agree with you, PDF was not designed to be used on smaller sizes. But the problem is that technical texts (maths, physics, that kind of things) are released in pdf, and converting these documents in something better suited for e-readers, like epub, just doesn't work: formulas get all mixed up with the text, which makes the document unreadable.

Producing a device able to deal with PDF's is not impossible though: I often read those PDF's on my 12'' laptop (which is also smaller than A4) without any display problems, as the width of the screen is large enough to display the full width of an A4 PDF at scale 1:1, and scrolling down is not a problem

Actually, this appears to handle pdfs well. The pan/zoom feature by dragging the stylus is something even the Entourage Edge can't do. The edge does pdf reading/annotating in a very similar way but on actual e-ink. It, too, cannot do landscape mode yet, but that's a very requested feature by our community and we believe they are working on it. (Unfortunately, the fact that it runs Android on the LCD screen means they have to divide their time between updating the e-ink features and keeping up with new Android releases, and right now we're awaiting Android 2.2).

On the edge, you can zoom and pan, but it's through physical buttons or pen clicks on menu items, and means an e-ink refresh for not only a zoom request but also a pan request. The zoom isn't too annoying, of course, but to refresh the page in a different position (and with set amounts of position change) for panning is annoying. Using the stylus to just kind of drag the viewable portion of the pdf as the video shows seems to be much more convenient.

Other than that, I think the edge is a bit more sophisticated in how it can annotate (and save) pdfs, but it's also a more expensive machine and interacts with an LCD tablet screen as well. One of the coolest features is the "send to e-ink" command in the native browser that converts any web page to a pdf or epub (you can choose) on the fly and displays it on the e-ink side so that you can then mark it up, save it, etc. I noticed the guy in the video also mentioned ePub has a better table of content system. Through use of the mark up features, the edge can allow you to create a custom table of contents for a pdf that does not come with its own table of content. (Every time you draw, highlight or insert a note, you create a table of content entry.) So if you're reading a long "10 ways to...." article, you can simply go through and highlight each of the 10 headers and you've created a table of contents.

But for half of the cost and less than half the weight, I can certainly see the appeal of the Eee Note over the edge for some users. If all you need is an infinite notepad and want to be able to also read documents, it looks like a no-brainer. This is the only thing I've seen that comes close to the edge for journal/pdf use without going for a full tablet PC.

- Then they gutted the e-ink refresh rate by making it nearly 100x faster. Slow down and smell the roses, I say.
They made the e-ink refresh rate 100x faster, and added 48 shades of gray? Well now you're talking. I did not realize this.

Finally, the nail in the coffin, so to speak.. The bastards at ASUS did it all at a price well under half of all comparable tablets while adding a Wacom input panel usually reserved for tablets costing 5 times as much!

My god.. You're right! I may as well just hire someone to kick me senseless.
Don't hire that gentleman just yet! You could be in luck. I just did a little shopping and I couldn't find any black and white tablet computing devices. The only ones I could find displayed images and video just like you find in those technicolor talkies. That's fine and dandy if you want those devices for "personal computing" or "multi-media" or whatever the nerds are calling it, but they didn't use actual ink particles to simulate paper; not like that Asus 100x E-Ink 48 Shade-o-tron!

I dunno, but it often has some shades of yellow, and pinkish-red for the eraser.

And what kind of paper you're writing on, and what HB value the graphite in the pencil has. That can range from 9H to 9xxB, producing a light grey to dark black line, respectively. Most commonly sold pencils are 2B or HB.

See http://www.pencils.com/hb-graphite-grading-scale for details.

There seem to be a lot of people on here fixated with it's screen. You should more be looking at what you can do with it.

I really don't see this replacing my 505, but rather complimenting it.

I am a rabid note-taker, usually with several notepads on the go. If I can change all that by carrying just this one device then I will most definitely be looking into this further.

Yeah! What he/she said.

I bought a LiveScribe pen just to get my multiple notepads into some semblance of electronic order, but the hassle of importing them into LiveScribe Desktop then exporting them to PDF for filing/emailing adds a couple of steps to the process. This could streamline things considerably, especially if I could email them directly for the EeeNote. I’m not sure if it has an email client, but if it doesn’t perhaps the built-in Evernote support can work for me.

I haven't seen any mention of an email client in the videos, but depending on the browser and file system, perhaps one could use web-based email. Maybe pb or some one else with the device can confirm?

With this device being based on Linux and QT, and seeing that there are already a few people doing strange things to their devices. I think that this will be a highly hackable device.

Nokia handsets were based on the same platform and this has a more powerful CPU, so hopefully porting apps won't be too much of a chore (for those that know how). It's been a while since I was in the software engineering biz, maybe it is time I bought something so I can keep my hand in.

I think that I'm up for getting one of these. If only I could interpret the Taiwanese websites.
