I hate it...

I'm only doing it because I love her, otherwise you wouldn't catch me within 10 meters of a car dealership.

Another two months and the rainy season will get underway in Japan, and my wife has decided that she wants a car. She says she's tired of riding motorcycles in the rain unless she 'wants' to ride in the rain. She wants the convenience of a car. (Pssst... I think she's getting old... )

Well, SHE wants a car, but she says I have to go with her to buy one. Why?
What the heck do I know about cars? They have walls that cage up people, isolating them from their environment. What more does anyone need to know? But she who must be obeyed says I gotta go. .So I'll go.
Car salesmen =
Stitchawl's car knowledge =

I'm not happy about this... I don't like cars. I don't like car salesmen. I don't like car dealerships. There are waaaaay too many different brands, styles, sizes, shapes.... Then we have to deal with finding a place to park it so she CAN buy it. In many Japanese cities you have to show proof of parking space before you can purchase a car.

This is NOT going to be a pleasant valley Sunday....

I'm not asking for much. I don't care what kind of car we have, as long as she's happy with it. To me, a Jeep is the same as a Mercedes. We don't need four-wheel drive. We don't take long car trips. We don't have a passel of kids to ferry around... A car is a car, right?

Now... if it were a motorcycle....

riding a motorcycle here means you get killed.

one time in the news, a woman riding with her fiancee on a motorcycle somehow got stuck to the rear end of a car and got dragged for miles (our roads are NOT smooth at all; full of crags and potholes). her face was unrecognizable.

No one gets out of this life alive. All motorcycle riders are gamblers. We are betting on our life span. We can improve the odds by improving our skills, choosing the proper equipment, and riding in a safe and sane manner, but in the end, we all still die. But you're correct... Riding motorcycles in the PI is dangerous.

Riding motorcycles isn't safe. Neither are boats unless they stay inside the harbor. But that's not what boats are for. We never discover new lands by staying in sight of the shore. Oddly enough, proportionally, there are far MORE car accidents than motorcycle accidents in First World Countries.

It's never too late to learn. Just be sure to go to a good riding school. After 35 years of riding every day, (and believing I was the world's greatest rider,) I went to a riding school here. I'm still amazed at how much it improved my riding skills and ability, and the better your skills, the safer you are. There were men and women in their 50's-60's attending the same school when I was doing my course there. They were brand new riders just experiencing it for the first time.

There is very little that approaches the freedom one feels on a motorcycle. When you travel in a car, you are 'inside' and 'passing through' your environment, looking out at it. When you are on a motorcycle, you are part of the environment, experiencing it with all your senses.

Yes, I am familiar with riding in the PI. I've ridden motorcycles all over Luzon,
Mindanau, and Palawan. It is some difficult riding, especially in Palawan (the roads were really rough and clean gas was often difficult to find) compared with riding in Europe or America.

Thanks for the advice.
Riding school (likely MSF) is the plan, but it'll have to wait, unfortunately. The motorcycle thing's high on my "healthy again" list.

Somehow twerked the brake lines to both rear wheels on my truck. Glad we were close to town when they let go, and not still on the interstate.
