Great news! Unfortunately for GRRM, he managed to annoy quite a few of his die hard fans by taking his time. I am all for waiting for the paperback or buying it second hand.

I read the first two several years ago, but even then I could tell he was dragging it out and milking it for all he could. Although, I should acknowledge that he has great characterization and dialog and an interesting world.

I've noticed that it's not only the lengthy wait for book 4 that upset his fans, they also seemed disappointed with the story. There's a lot riding on this 5th one.

Akkk, not the Saxon books!

I haven't started ASOIF yet either - burned out on WOT - but it may get me yet.

What's the beef exactly with the Saxon series? I have all the volumes to date, but haven't read them yet. Is Cornwell doing a Martin, so to speak?

Good books, the but the story is still hanging - first couple were more standalone but now it's going into saga mode.

See... I knew I picked a good time to quit after book 3 and wait for the series to be completed.

I'll believe it when I see it. I would be shocked to see it out in July if he has not finished it at this time.

This series has had more release dates that have been missed then just about any others I know of.

On top of that, the last book was not well received by anyone I know. They loved the first books but hated the last book. I think I will wait for it to actually come out and read some of the reviews starting with the ones in the middle. I don't trust the fan boys and don't want to slog through the negative reviews about how long it took for the book to come out.

Amazon is on PDT too, maybe I need to find an EDT bookseller?

Maybe someone from the different time zones will post on MR when it shows up. (Oh hell, I know I'm being pathetic but it's been so long )

I've tried pre-ordering ebooks from Amazon before and discovered to my regret that I could have had it sooner if I waited until the release date and bought it then, so staying up seems appropriate.
Ouch - that would be frustrating for sure. My pre-orders have been on schedule so far, but I doubt they were in such high demand. I can see these being sent out in batches.

With such a long book, I guess one could download the sample - surely it would download before the sample was finished.

I'm not sure if I'll pre-order or not, but I'll be at the camp-out, either way.

lol Sorry.

Cornwell says the next one - #6 - is due out in October. The last one was out in October in the UK, but wasn't released here until the following January, though, so...

From what he said recently, I expect there will be at least one more after that.

I thought the first 3 were pure greatness, but the 4th was crippled by only covering half the characters - the other characters were missed, and big developments couldn't proceed without them.

I went in expecting it to be awful, so wasn't too disappointed. Its being such a let-down from the 1st 3 made it easier to put the series down and wait.

I tend to trust this release date, for a few reasons:

- It's the first time an actual date has been given. Before, he'd just say he was hoping for a certain year or season. He quit doing that a few years ago, saying he wasn't going to say anything until he knew.

- Last October, he broke his silence and said he only had a few chapters to finish.

- (The biggest) He has HBO on his butt now.

I think you're right that everything hinges on this book. What worries me is that he seems to be over-thinking them.

His best books - 1st 3 - only took him ~2 years each to write - these have taken 5 each (10 total for the 1st write and re-write of this one).

Anyway, I'm hopeful, and I'll be on it, just because it's fun, but I really won't be surprised if this disappoints.

Keep in mind that many of those previous "release dates" that have been reported on Amazon or other bookseller sites had nothing to do with George. Those were placeholders that get slapped up there by publishers and the like (because they just can't say "we don't know"). Those dates are then promptly forgotten by the person who invented them. So when that dates arrives with no book... everyone screams bloody-murder. This just happened with Scott Lynch and his overdue book.

The difference with this date, is that it's the first one that has been confirmed by George, Bantam (U.S.) and Voyager (U.K) as being the "carved in stone" release date.

Believe me, I'm one of the most skeptical people you'll ever meet on this subject -- but even I'm having a hard time disbelieving that "this is it." Too many insiders have known about this date and managed to keep a lid on it for a long time. And then Entertainment Weekly "prematurely" broke the news - before George had a chance to do it himself.

I firmly believe it's a done deal.

Looks like you were right. It's available for pre-order at a few eBook sellers for $14.99 now.

$35 list price, I wonder what the list will be on the eBook.
if "the agency" has their say the ebook edition will be about $148.95 to cover download, OCR (or is it OCD? I forget and get them confused) and CEO private jets along with hot and cold running hookers.

Same publisher, releases in about a week and currently priced at $12.99. But GRRM has a rabid fanbase, so they could easily milk it for $2 more...
I can understand avoiding it but it really is a shame, it's an amazing series.

Just opinion here but ASoIaF pretty much smokes the WoT series.
