An unfortunate failed Satellite Launch :(

Unfortunate in general, but in particular because it carried instruments build by my son's colleagues at CU Boulder.

Ouch. I feel for your son's colleagues. I had an old college colleague who was the principal investigator for a NASA satellite that launched and failed to reach orbit a decade ago. Many years of work leading up to it (and years more of work that was to come) all disappeared in a matter of seconds. Makes me wonder what he's up to now.

EDIT: Okay, it looks like he's no longer associated with the Jet Propulsion Lab and he's now teaching at a small college. It was perhaps a life-changing event for him.

Yep. That's exactly it. Many many years went into the planning and building. Now it's at the bottom of the ocean instead of observing the sun.

That's an extremely major disappointment for your son and his colleagues, and for everyone who loves discovery. Sorry to hear about it, Kenny.

I heard about this elsewhere too. A great shame. Do you know if it's possible that a replacement will get built/launched?

I don't know at this point. Not likely, probably other projects in the pipeline I suspect.
