Quite frankly, Apple came, I saw, and I wasn't conquered -- no iPad in my future. If I were looking to buy a tablet today, I'd be more inclined to spend the additional money and get the Motorola Xoom. But I'm one of those people who are willing to pay for quality and features I actually use rather than for flash I can't (which is why I sprung for the Sony 950

).

I suppose the major reason to upgrade is similar to why you buy a new car, that is your neighbor bought a new car.

I suspect it's not really aimed at "upgraders"; more at people who'd previously held off buying one.

Yes, the new features are welcome but it does feel as though this is the iPad staying competitive for 2011 rather than any great advance.

Now if only AT&T wouldn't attack my wallet if I "hotspot" my iPhone to a wifi-only iPad! I know, only an extra $20 a month but any extra feels absurd.

Oh Yeah! I tried out the $20/mo Verizon Hotspot with/for my DroidX and decided it just wasn't worth it for 1G/mo. Now that I've bought the Xoom I considered carefully if wanted it without wireless or not and end the end ended up with the 3Gb/mo plan at $35/month.....eeeek! But I'll make some other trade-offs and will probably find it is useful in the long run....or maybe not....

Sony has always had magnets in their covers for the Readers. No harm that I know of.

Actually there are magnets in the cover and magnets in the device. This is the innovation in that it is self aligning with the magnets designed to attract each other to position the cover on the device.

Still it's a nice hardware spec yet nothing impressive other than it's thinner. It's not just Apple but really, much like our ereading devices I am very underwhelmed. If I was in the market for an Apple device I would be happy I waited for the iPad 2 just because after handling the iPad 1 I think thinner and lighter is better in this case.

Wow people are spoiled. If my laptop from one year to the next gets 2x faster CPU, thinner, lighter, faster graphics, but keeps same price and battery life, I'll be pretty damn happy.

Do people really swallow the whole apple hype and expect them to come out with a game changer EVERY year?

one thing that looked funny about the cover to me:
the microwhatever side (that cleans the screen) is also face down when you use it as a stand. seems like it would pick up gunk, dust, spills, etc.

thought it looked pretty cool though.

I'm hoping that the iPad 3 which is rumored for September w/ retina is a 7 inch. I just can't see them switching to a new release after 6 months unless it somehow does not directly compete w iPad 2.

I think I would buy a 7 inch retina iPad for 300-400 bucks.

I think there is no question that the new iPad is superior to the old, but personally I don't see any reason to spend the money to upgrade. That isn't the same as saying it isn't better.
