Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the point was the number of people who have devices that can share the same content across platforms will always outnumber the number of people who use devices from one company that locks you in that company's provided content, so that model will likely never be able to be dominant.

That's not as important, as Amazon and B&N will sell eBooks to people who do not own their respective devices, while Apple won't.

You don't need a Kindle to buy Kindle books
You don't need a Nook to buy Nookbooks

You do need an iDevice to buy iBooks.

Therefore Apple's potential eBook customer base is limited to those people who already own one of their devices, while Amazon's and B&N's aren't.

I don't think that this is Apple's idea. Amazon, B&N and Kobo all have platforms closed to each other-and to Apple. Oddly, they are considered the good guys in all this, while Apple is the evil monopolist. When this is pointed out , Amazon apologists explain this is OK because Amazon has always been closed!
Intereresting logic, that.

Wow. Closed to Apple? Really? Did you forget what this thread was about?
Look at the title. Stunning.

This sentence does not even make sense. Closed to each other? WTF?

The main point is that you can read B&N and Amazon ebooks on all platforms (Windows, Blackberry, Android etc) while you can read iBooks ebooks on how many platforms? Right, only one.

Yes, they all have devices that can't access the other's stores, but that's not the point here. The point is that you can buy an eBook from any of the others even if you don’t own their device.

The point is that Apple (and Android) allow the booksellers to access the books on those platforms (Not sure about Blackberry).
Amazon, Kobo, B&N do not allow Ibooks on their devices. Dunno why that is, but there is an imbalance there.
Despite that , there are a lot of iOS devices out there. I would agree that Apple is not dominant now, but it is a major player.
AS is clear (except to those who don't want to admit), iOS is in a sense a more open platform than the one most favored here.

AFAIK, iBooks could be read on the Nook or Sony or Kobo (or any epub reader) if Apple didn't put its Fairplay DRM on iBooks. In other words, it's is Apple that is keeping the off of others' devices. (Aside from DRM, I'm not sure how you would transfer the book, although I would assume you could transfer the file from iTunes).

i0S is a computer, and so its ability to run other programs makes it, in a sense, more open than a dedicated e-reader. But it's more open than a dedicated e-reader in the same way that my computer is more open than my radio - I can't play video on my radio, for example. I'm not sure how meaningful that is.

It's because Apple does not allow iBooks to be read on those devices.

If Apple used standard Adobe DRM their books could be read on all major devices except the Kindle.

Maybe stonetools could talk to his superiors at Apple about this.

Even that would not be necessary. It would be enough if Apple developed iBooks reader application for Blackberry, Android and Windows Phone 7 and desktop OS just like Amazon developed those applications.

Except that that wouldn't help on the Sony, Kobo, Bookeen, Pocketbook, Nook Classic, etc., dedicated readers.

Did any of those dedicated devices tempt customers into buying them by allowing the reader apps from those other stores to run on them, then pull a stunt that may force them off, depriving customers of a feature they paid for and may be depending on?
