Cooking Apps with Videos

I'm REALLY enjoying the new cooking apps with videos. Tonight I made Chili Chicken with Lime Guacamole from Gordon Ramsey's app. It was delicious and the video did a great job showing how to cook this meal.

I've made a wonderful Italian Sausage and Peppers dish from Mario Batali's app. Jamie Oliver has a nice app as well.

There are lots of cooking/recipe apps for the iPad, but I'm enjoying the ones like these three that have videos. Give me 20 to 50 recipes with videos over a book with 1000 text recipes any day!

I don't need video but love a picture of the finished product. Since most of my cooking is simple grilling I love using 'ON THE GRILL' and the free app for 'WHOLE FOODS' is also nice. My first cookbook on the iPad was 'BIG OVEN' which I still use.

Does it swear at you while you're doing the cooking?

What's your set up for cooking while using the Ipad? Do you put it in a ziploc bag? ( I'm thinking about keeping it clean while you are going back and forth between handling the ingredients and using instructions?)

A large freezer bag would do, I've heard of people using them. Me, I just take care and wash my hands if I need to before touching the iPad.

What's the benefit of the App compared to a normal video?

It probably depends a bit on the app. I have some non-video (Italian) cooking apps that have useful search facilities so you can search by a combination of ingredient/recipe origin/type of dish. The Jamie Oliver app is a bit limited in comparison - I don't know about the others.

The Jamie Oliver app lets you do things like add the ingredients from the recipe into a shopping list - so in theory you could watch the video on the train home, make up the shopping list and then get the stuff on the way home. The navigation is better than with a DVD but that's about it really.

I'm not suggesting a youtube video or other cooking video aren't great, becuase they certainly can be. I learned to make sausage gravy by looking for videos via youtube.

But, with an App, there is usually more than just the video. There is the recipe, step by step instructions (in addition to the video), shopping lists, search for recipes by course, ingredient etc. There's just a lot more that can be done with an app.

Along the lines of cooking apps....has anyone found an app that includes a good menu planner? I've seen a number of apps that are basically recipe collections but haven't been able to find one that lets you input your own recipes, plan a menu and generate a shopping list from the menu.

Have a look at Pepperplate. I grabbed it last week and it's supposed to do what you listed, but I haven't really played with it yet.

That recipe has become part of our family repertoire. Haven't picked out my second recipe yet.
