2-3 gigs in a few weeks is a LOT! I don't know if I could do that if I tried, outside downloading torrents.

@captkjaneway: I am neither pro nor anti apple. I love my iPhone, yet I wouldn't buy an iPad and FORGET ever replacing my PC/Laptop with a MAC. But one thing Apple does well is under experience. For my parents as an example, who simply want e-mail and web browsing, I think an iMac is a great solution. Big screen, no tower or bunch of wires cluttering things up. Just the screen, keyboard and mouse. Easy to use.

Ya know, part of me LIKES less RAM because it requires more efficient code and compilers. It's a shame they don't allow assembly coding for a lot of the functions over calls to their API.

Still at the cost of RAM no reason to put too much of a limit, however for a phone really, even just 512MB should be plenty even with the way iOS manages memory.

I would rather see companies stick with less RAM for a few years to get developers to be as frugal as possible and optimize their code until it starts bleeding from it's eyes and ears before letting them loose with more space.

Though aren't there just three languages for iOS devices? C++, C and Objective C or something like that? Or did they relax it a bit since I last looked? I don't mind just C as it's a compiled language compared the the wide range of interpreted options we have today, most all of which are really only shades-of-grey different from each other in the end.

then again if you are traveling and decide to stream a movie or, well, a single movie in HD sending it out to the TV in the room *poof* goes either all of a huge portion of your allotment.

It just bugs me with the duplicity of selling uber fast connections, OK 3G is not that fast in most places here in the US anymore (it actually was a few years back). But still you don't get to actually use the potential of that bandwidth. I can wait a few moments longer to download my email over dial-up speeds if that means not spending the $30/mo on the data plan. Then again my month-to-month data plan for travel while it's $70/mo there is no cap and no throttling. There is a soft-cap of 50GB where they might peek at how you are using it but unless you are running an internet cafe it's fine. I've done 200-300GB in a month no problem while on the road just using Netflix and Hulu.

No if hotels and motels had more uniform fast web access then I would be fine with a 5-10GB data plan. but when I am on the road I need the bandwidth for data in BOTH directions as i send a lot of large files 20-30MB each on a daily basis. And there can easily be 100-200 daily.

Hrm, I suppose if you are traveling a lot and send a ton of data for business I can see it. Usually I find hotels have reasonable internet access. I guess out of habit I tend to save my bandwidth intensive downloading for when I am on WiFi, then watch the saved file when I want. Of course in Canada, we don't have Hulu, which I used a lot when I was living in Texas. We do have netflix though. I subscribed for a little while, but didn't find I used it much. Again, I tend to get most of my stuff from torrents.

(and it's not that I am averse to paying. I pay a lot each month for cable TV, and everything I grab from torrent trackers is stuff I could watch on TV if I bothered to schedule the time, or wanted to buy and program a DVR, I just find torrents easier and more convenient)

I just went through that thread. LOL I could not believe what I read.

Oye. Playing with the Xoom and then going to the iPad is like going from riding a roller coaster at Six Flags to riding the Tea Cup ride at Disney.

I'm sorry iPhans, but iOS is boooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring.

Less of an issue for tablets, but in phones increasing ram beyond what the os needs is actually a really bad idea since it decreases battery life.

Nope. It may be available, but not enabled. That's the way my DroidX is. I either have to buy the Hotspot app and service from Verizon or have to root it and run a freeware app.

With the Xoom it's just part of the wireless configuration. No enabling, extra charges, etc.
